The 95 driver might be fine. Though with the exception of extra buttons and things, a serial mouse driver should mostly work for any serial mouse as long as it wasn't a super early one before they standardized a bit. Back in the DOS days, you could pretty much load almost any serial mouse wedge and it would work for basic movement and buttons if an application or game supported one.

This page talks about disabling serial mouse detection in W7 for someone trying to use some other serial device, so sounds like they're still supported.

I just found a box of Kensingtons at a thrift store today (one new in box even) and i'm wondering if you ever got this to work with Win7?

I've owned a few iomega iogear brand serial-to-usb adapters (canadian retailers here adopted this brand early and still carried their devices for years) and they all still work great. You can configure the baud rate and flow control extremely well from the device manager tabs. Some devices and programs are extremely finnicky about the capabilities and speed of the virtual serial port but with a quick google search I've been able to get everything running smoothly be it a HID or a serial flashcart dumper, old in-between communications device or even some calculators. If someone needs further details on the model number of my newest one I can provide it shortly.

Thanks for bumping this old thread. I actually forgot I ever started this thread. I never got my serial trackball to work, not because of any technical problem, but because I was in a financial pinch and I couldn't afford to buy the serial to USB adapter. It's now a year a year later, and (wouldn't you know it) money is tight again. One of these days I'll be able to buy the adapter I need.

I have the drivers for Mac OS9 and OSX; Windows 95, 98, XP and 7 for the IOGear USB to Serial adapter. Its relatively inexpensive online. I also updated my review of the Kenningston, IOGear USB adapter and the SmartJoy Frag.

I just double-checked. The driver on my floppy disk is made for Windows 95. It seems unlikely to me that I can make this bit of software work on Win7 (let alone OSX). Kensington makes a software called "mouseworks," but they stopped suporting serial communication a long time ago.

Someone posted a workaround that maybe sorta kinda mite have a chance of working. This workaround is for an expertmouse 7.0, not for my expertmouse 5.0 so who knows?

Unfortunately the IntelliPoint driver in that link will work on only the newer USB Kenningston Trakball. I went that driver route a while back with no luck. However, the XMouse in that post looks to add a button configure. The IOGear USB Serial adapter drivers I found would not allow four separate buttons of the Kenningston, only two. However it does work in my Windows 7 Laptop.

Get the IOGear USB to Serial adapter, it works!
