I just bought an Alienware Alpha for my lazy new HTPC/Lite Steam Machine. Considering the damage was only $286 (multiple vouchers, coupon codes, and military discount) it was a no-brainer.
My primary rig is waiting for Fiji. Oh, it's coming.

Re: PC build thread
I've got my eye on a Silverstone microATX case for my tentative June build. Starting to get the itch again!

Re: PC build thread
My computer has been giving me a lot of trouble lately. Keeps turning off when I do almost anything, playing most games - especially 3D ones, and even watching a large number of YouTube videos. This is what it was: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6883113135
I thought it was a power supply issue (I had added two internal hard drives for installing games and movies) but after getting a much better one, the problem continues. I was planning to build a new rig anyway, so I guess I'll have to do it faster than initially planned. Was planning to use the i7 in the new rig, but it looks like it's not compatible with anything on the market now. Sigh. Money washing down the drain.
Here's the plan for that:
CPU: Intel i5-4690k
Mobo: ASRock H97M PRO4
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3-1600
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 270X (Already Have)
Power Supply: Corsair CX 750W (Already in current setup)
Everything else (Optical Drive, Storage, etc.) is just going to be harvested from my current rig. Will probably use what's useful from my current build to make an HTPC/Streaming setup down the road.
I know that AMD Processors are a lot cheaper than Intel - if I were to go with an AMD Processor and compatible motherboard, could I get similar performance for a lower price? I am on a tight budget right now.

Re: PC build thread
Before you rebuild might try reinstalling windows clean, might be registry issues etc.
I assume you checked hdd for errors?

Yeah, it said there were no errors when I checked it.noiseredux wrote:Before you rebuild might try reinstalling windows clean, might be registry issues etc.

I did uninstall and then update a lot of my drivers a few weeks back, but still nothing. I guess I'll try reinstalling windows - when I have some time and can find that blasted disc. Stuff always goes missing when you need it.
In any case, I've needed to upgrade my rig for a while now.

Re: PC build thread
a clean Windows install can do wonders. I just went through that recently actually.
Not that I'm trying to stop you from upgrading. I'm rocking the 4690k now and it's fantastic. Also got an ASRock Z97, so if you're just looking for an excuse to upgrade man, party on.

Re: PC build thread
Cool. Any experience with AMD processors/mobos? If I can go cheaper and get mostly the same results, I could certainly take any savings I can get. Just needs to be able to play and do video and image processoring.noiseredux wrote:a clean Windows install can do wonders. I just went through that recently actually.

Re: PC build thread
You will save a few dollars, but sacrifice a lot of performance (going the AMD route).
