I was watching some videos of original Game Boys with backlit and biverted screen mods. It looks great and it's pretty tempting to pick up one of those (mostly because it bums me out I can't play Road Rash on a GBA ).

There's also those "GB Boy Colour" clones that look amazing but there are some compatibility issues like most clones.

Imo get a gameboy pocket backlit modded, the original DMGs have some horrible ghosting. Anything moving fast turns into a horrible blurry mess.

The bivert mod seems to clean it up a bit from what I've seen.

Still some blur but a noticeable improvement.

There are pros and cons with the Pocket. It's sleek, portable and generally I like it a lot. The screen is also superior but it's got the same cramped feeling I get with the AGS-101.

The original DMG has some heft to it and fits better in my stupid-long fingers and, well, nostalgia of course.

Yes, this. An adapter is something I'd really love.

Maybe the next version of the Retron will come with a cart slot...and maybe one for the Master System too. That would be nice. That's probably me just wishful thinking again, though

The Retron 5 works with the Power Base Converter at least.

I wonder if it would be feasible for them to just release other cartridge slot adapters like that and just update the firmware with new emulators.

I've been crossing my fingers ever since I heard a rumor suggesting Hyperkin were working with something N64 related. Don't know if that will go anywhere though.

It seems to me that people are far more interested in modding and doing cool stuff with gameboys than actually playing games on them. Like 80% of the people I've talked to who are into gameboy's tend to just use them for chiptune.

On a completely different topic does anyone know any decent uk based places to cop cheap gameboy games? I bought a gbc for like £10 with Commander Keen and Tetris at a charity shop a while back but other than that I havent been able to find any places selling them and online it all seems a bit overpriced.

Well, I think it's rather understandable why there's not much of a scene for GB/GBC: they're so low-res, and many of the games are so simple. In a way they were like the cell phone games of their time, with exceptions for stuff like Pokemon or Zelda.

In the case of GBA, I think it's just due to the age. It's not quite old enough to have garnered a retro scene like the SNES or N64. Give it a few more years and we'll all be crying when we pay $35 for a cart-only copy of Mario.

I'm in the U.S. but always ask. A lot of places keep portable carts tucked away behind the counter.

I'd agree with ya here but the NES scene is thriving with a very similar scope of game design to its library.
