I don't know. It's not like they're free roaming, they're a straight line from point A to point B and mostly recycled assets from beginning to end.alienjesus wrote:Those 3D levels running stages have to be absolutely massive though, they must take ages to build and render. I'm pretty sure the reason the other playstyles are in there is to pad the game out with something that can be created with less resources, as a game of 10 of those running stages would be incredibly short by modern standards and still take a damn long time and a lot of money to develop.Snatch1414 wrote:dogman91 wrote: In general I think they had it right with the 3D Sonic or Shadow levels in SA and SA2. That's all anyone ever wanted from Sonic when the next generation came along. Instead they muddied the waters with other levels and gameplay that no one cared about and for good reason. The straight up levels were great, and in some ways more memorable than anything Sonic did on the Genesis. As someone else said though, they continue to try too hard and get fancy when I think all people want is those levels from the DC games.

I actually don't like this style that much, actually. Just run in a straight line and some occasional platforming. The plus is that you see more of what's in front of you unlike the Genesis games, but they're really quite different. I feel the Genesis ones have better gameplay overall; DEFINITELY so once we're talking anything post-Sonic Adventure.
edit: also, I didn't say that, in regards to the post above; just pointing that misquote out as my post here contradicts that

Wow, even with the fact that I give huge, sometimes undeserved, amounts of forgiveness to games that feature mecha I still think Heavy Nova is trash.Luke wrote:Heavy Nova is a perfectly fine game.
The intro is fabulous though.
Have you played the sequel, Black Hole Assault, on the Sega CD? It's a bit of an improvement on the formula in my opinion.
To be fair I think Cyborg Justice is a perfectly fine game.

Didn't know until right now that BHA existed.Gunstar Green wrote: Have you played the sequel, Black Hole Assault, on the Sega CD? It's a bit of an improvement on the formula in my opinion.
The hit detection in Nova stinks, the sprites move at a turtle's pace, but I still like it.

Man, I loved OMF: 2097. Great music, played very, very well, especially considering it was only a two-button fighter, and the light RPG elements gave it a touch of depth.
I... should probably give Heavy Nova a shot, just to say that I gave it a shot and it's not as good as OMF.

I highly recommend looking deeper into OMF. There is a lot of depth to the game that a lot of people don't notice, like the various hidden fighters, the various fatalities and other events that you can easily miss if you don't go crazy into it or look at an FAQ.Sarge wrote:Man, I loved OMF: 2097. You guys are crazy in your crazy place.
Heck even back then the best DOS PC robot fighting game was.
Heavy Nova is a cool game once you master its off kilter feel. The controls felt sluggish and the robots felt heavy because THEY WERE GIANT MECHS and physics.
