Wii-U thoughts so far

well.. it does, but tens and tens of games look even better...

Are you still talking console RPGs?
Are you talking about better graphics, better gameplay, or both?

I'm also interested to hear what comparable games are coming out that you think look better.


Again, this is just a personal judgement. For me, Xenoblade was one of those rare game that hit all the right notes, consistently blew away my expectations, and left me wanting more despite playing for well over a hundred hours. The last time that happened to me was during the SNES era, so I'm excited to see what the sequel offers (even if I doubt it will have the same effect).

I think people get, "looks great," confused with, "Visually looks great." (even though the game does look visually great.)

Probably. I've kind of fallen out of love with the Final Fantasy series though. Too much focus on production values over gameplay - or even offering a strong story in some cases. They are still fine games that seem to (mostly) accomplish what they set out to do... but they just aren't doing much that appeals to me.

Seems like the real strength of that brand is rooted in nostalgia at this point, with games from the SNES and PS eras often considered the best.


If you care about games having good graphics then you might not enjoy Xenoblade (Wii) due to the lack of HD and ugly character models. The Wii U sequel should look better, but I'm still not expecting a graphical powerhouse.

They are aaaalmost in a different genre. While technically RPGs, the monster training games are almost their own thing now.

Pokemon is still an RPG, but it's clear that monster training is becoming a sub-genre, in RPG games these days.

So if youve heard about Rodea the Sky Solder, heres something interesting, the Wii U first run copy of the game comes with a Wii copy also. So this will be the Wii's last game technically.

Before it was announced for Wii U, Rodea the Sky Soldier was originally in development for Wii. The Wii version was completed but never released. By including the Wii version of the game, you’ll be able to see creator Yuji Naka’s original vision for Rodea.

I really do think though that pokemon has by far the most (more? fix my grammar) superior battle system and mechanics when it comes to mainstream JRPGs. Even though it's very different in story mechanics, I find that if you really enjoy JRPG battles and want something mainstream, Pokemon is the only one that delivers deep strategic thinking.....though of course not on the main campaign, so I guess it really IS a different genre since it focuses on the meta game . Just food for thought.
