Original v1.6 Xbox randomly failed.

Post by Xmsteel »

Hey everyone, stumbled across the site when I was google-ing original xbox stuff.

I just purchased my dream Xbox I've wanted since 2004 a couple days ago, the green Halo special edition. I have a parts v1.0/v1.1 console (failed motherboard), a 1.6 that was 100% working, and then added this one.

Well, my 1.6 worked fantastic and the halo one I just bought seemed to be slightly "edgy". As in, it was on its last-half of its life. So because of this, I decided to switch the internals from my 1.6. Put the 1.6 internals in the halo case, and have a fantastic system in the best case, and have the so-so halo internals into the regular case.

Well, my plan worked. So I thought. Once I switched every thing from one to the other, I powered them both on. Worked just as planned. The halo one was working awesome and the other was working OK. Then, the unthinkable happened.

I went to play the Halo console the next morning and it wouldn't turn on. At all. Nothing. I exchanged power cords (straight cord and then the one with the test button). Nothing. So I plug in the regular box using the halo internals now, works fine.

So now I switched back the internals to the way they were, halo edition in the halo console, 1.6 in the black console. But now I am out one xbox. So I have a 1.6 and a 1.0/1.1 for parts now.

What in the world happened? It worked fine, then the next morning it was dead as could be? And even more weird, the halo box is working better than before. I'm sure it was because I cleaned out the dust and put new thermal paste on the processor, but still.

I'm really disappointed now that the box I thought was in its prime and had years of life left just died all of a sudden. I'm just hoping the halo one isn't almost ready to expire as well, then I'll have three xbox for parts.

It could have been many different things.

Try the simplest check first. Unplug and replug in the video cable. The Xbox will flash the eject button light if the video cable is not detected.

That stated, I doubt this is the issue since you already took the console apart a couple of times and swapped some components. Perhaps something internal is not hooked up right or there might be electrical static damage.

I'm thinking somehow there was damage from static. I was careful to use antistatic bags and take precaution, but I guess its possible I fried the PSU. I just don't get how it could have worked perfect one night and in the morning it was dead.

I'm assuming the PSU to the 1.6 and the Halo edition differ because I swapped them and neither would turn on. Swapped back and then just the one would turn on.
