i know this is an old topic but i'd rather ask this here, where can i find the game bit for the game boy games and the system? i've been searching on amazon but there are mixed reviews for a lot of them.
are there any hardware stores that have good quality ones? (VGC doesn't carry them, and i know GameStop doesn't.)

Just buy one from ebay. It cost around 5$, and the quality is great. As long as it came in one pice from china it should "work" forever

Sorry for my engrish

There are different quality ones. I have dark ones that I bought years ago that are very high quality with nice defined teeth. Unfortunately that seller and website seem to no longer exist. I also have an older Zoozen console tool kit (in a black case) from the 360 era that has some very badly made silver ones. They work, but they show wear with not much traveling use.
So see if you can get pictures or very specific recommendations from people that have certain ones.

Hardware stores aren't likely to carry them, but if you try, the real name for them is "line head screw" as opposed to "game bit".
