I think it's weird that you've been so into pogs lately.TSTR wrote:28, don't do anything as much as I should. This includes working (not at the moment, hehe), spending time with both significant and not-so-significant people, making music, playing games, reading, on and on and on. I am what you might call "lazy." Except for the internet, which I am probably clinically addicted to.
But, for a more detailed answer, I also like to consider myself a "burst" type of person. If I get into something, I'm gonna go hard at it until it doesn't interest me anymore for the time being. For example, I crushed like 5 different manga series over the past couple weeks, ranging in length from ~30 to ~200 chapters each. However, I haven't played games worth a damn. The same thing happens no matter what it is I'm doing; it's just kind of how I go at things.
Sometimes I wish I could focus and prioritize things better, but often I just don't care enough to. It's my body; I'll do what I want.
How do you personally make time for gaming?

Well the sad thing is, in your mid thirties you are in this interesting place where you are still young, but you also realize a big chunk of your youth is gone. This has left me thinking about what I've done with my life so far...and the rather large amount of time I have devoted to gaming that I could perhaps have used more constructively. I look at how much of my youth I have left and what I should be doing with it, what goals have I not yet achieved that I should be pursuing?Exhuminator wrote:What I find interesting is that you would say gaming is your main hobby, all while consciously choosing not to play games, despite having plenty of time to do so. If I were you, I would look more closely at what I was doing in my free time outside of gaming. As that activity is now your actual main hobby it would seem.irixith wrote:but thought you might find it interesting that a single person with no kids who doesn't have trouble finding the time chooses not to, even though gaming is their main hobby. From that dispassion I find your username a little ironic.Gamerforlife wrote:You just described me and my life pretty well for the most part (not self employed unfortunately, working for a corporation), as well as how I feel about gaming lately, and how much time I actually devote to it anymore![]()
Well at least by coming to this gaming forum, you two fine gentlemen can indulge vicariously through those of us who actually play video games.
I'm at a point now where I feel like for me to sit down and play something, it needs to be REALLY good because I am starting to think more seriously about what I do with my time these days. I've started exercising more regularly lately for example, and that has certainly cut into time I used to spend gaming.

An easy way to fuck with your own head is to start thinking you need to "do something" with your life. Life just is; enjoy.

Re: How do you personally make time for gaming?
My favorite personal motto is; "Moderation in all things." There should be a balance in all things one does. If you spend too much time on any one thing, you neglect some other thing. That's just the nature of our existence. There's a lot of truth in the saying; "Familiarity breeds contempt." If you do any one thing too much you will get sick of it and lose interest. That's why I have other hobbies outside of gaming. The biggest one being outdoor hiking and camping. It's a stark contrast to indoor electronic gaming and helps balance out my free time, for example. Being in your mid-thirties shouldn't be a factor in this though. Pursuing goals and maintaining self improvement should be continuous strides no matter how old someone is. That may sound smarmy, but their are only two alternatives; remain stagnant or atrophy.Gamerforlife wrote:This has left me thinking about what I've done with my life so far...and the rather large amount of time I have devoted to gaming that I could perhaps have used more constructively.
I agree those are important ideas to ponder and strive towards realizing. But relaxing for an hour or two a day with a game shouldn't be the wedge that stops you from doing as such. That sounds more like pointing at gaming as a scapegoat for accomplishment analysis paralysis.Gamerforlife wrote:I look at how much of my youth I have left and what I should be doing with it, what goals have I not yet achieved that I should be pursuing?
I'm glad you do so. I exercise at least 45 minutes a day as well. Primarily taking my dog for a two or three mile walk. If you're not walking I recommend it because it gives you plenty of time to think, and it induces thought. (Albert loved taking walks around town. His walks gave him "think" time and he was able to relax with the world.)Gamerforlife wrote:I've started exercising more regularly lately for example, and that has certainly cut into time I used to spend gaming.
Well, that's one way to look at it. One could see life not as a learning experience, but just a cosmic blip in eternity. One could enjoy a life of endless hobby indulgence, bereft of seeking the deeper experiences of life. Though one may look forward and see one's self as a lonely old man with nothing to show for one's life but thousands and thousands of hours of video gaming. Perhaps there are some who would regret such an existence on their death bed, solitarily staring at a beeping machine that felt nothing when they died. Personally I believe indulging too much in pleasure at the expense of existential growth is a shallow ideal. In time a comfortable rut fits like a grave. Well that's my opinion sir.MrPopo wrote:An easy way to fuck with your own head is to start thinking you need to "do something" with your life. Life just is; enjoy.
