Why not just mod the console? Seriously, it's like a 15-30 minute job. Even if you don't cleanly remove the blocks that hinder other region carts from being inserted, you're never gonna see it. It's inside the cart slot, which is always being blocked by either the doors or a cart.
The short of it is that Krikzz now has N64 cart shells (in grey and semi-transparent red) that fit standard N64 cart PCBs. He currently does not sell them by themselves, but said he will in the future. I have no idea if the back half will match up perfectly with the front half from a legit shell, but I would assume so.
But if you ask me, this is a stupid way of doing it. Either remove the blocks from the console or use a Game Shark.

The "mod" takes less then 5 minutes start to finish - 4 minutes of that is removing the shell and screws.
THIS.
I noticed the N64 carts do have (though slight) side to side movement. Just swap in the back of a common sports cart to the import cat. The region slots may help to lock in the cart better.
The console region block removal the better route if there are a lot of import carts involved.
I was too lazy to open my N64 up for the region mod, but finally got around to doing it when I added RGB output. Honestly, I barely remember that those blocks are missing. There's no side to side movement.

This is what I've been doing so far, I just wanted to try to find a solution that would allow me to use an unmodded Japanese system if I wanted. (I don't currently have one, but that's not to say I never will). I just wanted a solution that wouldn't be as costly as getting more games just for the backplates or as inconvenient as constantly swapping backs from my existing collection. The console mod route would work, but sometimes I'll play with friends on their unmodded consoles.

So mod your own console for yourself, and then get a Game Shark to bring to your friend's houses when you go.
I'll just point out that the mod is basically free. You might only need to buy the security bit so you can open the console, but that'll only be a few bucks. You should have one on hand anyway. The v3.x N64 GameSharks are going for $20-30 on eBay. Although with the GameShark, you'll get some other benefits besides using JPN carts. In addition to using cheats, you can also use a GS to transfer saves from one cart to another and other such things.
