It is a pretty good port of Shinobi to be honest

Busy with Dynamite Headdy on the Master System.

Bit of a gimped version of the original 16-bit game, but still quite enjoyable.

Now, doesn't this say something about Master System? So many of the best SMS games are down ports of better Genesis games. I'm not saying that SMS games are bad or unworthy of play time. I'm just saying that much of the time, I'd rather be playing Genesis.

Some of the most notable 'downports' are basically their own thing. Castle of Illusion and Sonic the Hedgehog are totally different to their 16 bit counterparts, and just as enjoyable.

I don't have a massive SMS collection (18 games), but it contains very few of those 'downports'.

Here's what I have:
Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Asterix
Asterix and the Secret Mission
Aztec Adventure
Bubble Bobble
Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse
Fantasy Zone
Golden Axe Warrior
The Lucky Dime Caper starring Donald Duck
The New Zealand Story
The Ninja
Penguin Land
Phantasy Star
Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Wonder Boy 3: The Dragons Trap
Wonder Boy in Monster World
Ys: The Vanished Omens
Just off the top of my head, there's a bunch more that are great without being downported from Mega Drive:
Alex Kidd & the lost stars, Land of Illusion, Legend of Illusion, Deep Duck Trouble, Fantasy Zone 2, Golvellius, Ninja Gaiden, Sonic Chaos, Wonder Boy, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Power Strike, Power Strike 2, Master of Darkness, Psycho Fox, Shinobi, Rescue Mission, R-Type

Admittedly, some of the arcade ports have better versions elsewhere, but there's still plenty to play on Master System without just getting a bunch of dodgy Mega Drive ports.

Is it true that Nintendo had the cross design copyrighted? I seem to hear that referenced from time to time.

In any case, the SMS d-pad is like a big mushy square. I don't care for it. Playing SMS games on the Genesis with the PBC is a far superior experience.

As for the "downports" - I like them quite a bit. As a ports junkie I have always appreciated Sega's willingness to develop (or give permission to others to develop) multiple versions of their games. Their arcade stuff is all over the place. Hell, I have After Burner, Altered Beast, Congo Bongo, and OutRun on Commodore 64!

I always kinda wished that Nintendo had done the downport thing. Imagine Super Mario World and Link to the Past on NES!

I think there are a lot of good originals honestly (won't patronize anyone by listing them). There's also games that came out for systems you'll probably never play them on but there's a good version on the SMS. Ghost House for instance was a Commodore game I believe.

Speaking of good SMS games, I acquired Quartet recently and I think it's pretty good.
