1) Sight reading can come later, though. You have to be able to actually play the part if you're hoping to sight read it, after all. Sight reading is a completely different area of playing an instrument. If you ever want to sight read a piece, and do it well, you would have had to already mastered that level of playing first.

2) When I was going through school...you were rated on two things separately. How well you were able to play an approved piece of music (that you got to practice for weeks) and how well you could sight read a piece.

3) And now I have Money stuck in my head.
1) Definitely. And I'm not stating that everyone should have the goal of picking up any piece of sheet music with the intent to play it without mistakes, but that was how I was trained.

And it's not like my teacher was behind me with a whip lashing me every and each time I missed a note..It was always my personal goal to be able to play pieces with just a glance.

And I'm okay at best. I'm big into music and see musicians very frequently who play forty minute compositions without sheet music. The music is engrained to their very brain. I can barely play twenty minutes of Gershwin without needing notes.

2) That's exactly how I was judged at a state level as well. Both tests were judged blindly, by three judges: one piece that was practiced, or "signature", and one piece that was to be played on sight. Still think favoritism could have been a factored as the judges knew your name.

3) Great song. Fun to play too!

(I mean, it just doesn't make sense. A billion is a million of millions hence the "bi". Similarly, a trillion is a million of a million millions hence the "tri". Also, metric, c'mon )
Seriously? I have a number of friends from other countries - an old friend from UK specifically, but family in Italy and a digital pen pal in Russia and friends in Australia, and I've never heard of this before. At least, not in English. I'm aware in other languages you have things like mille (thousand) vs millione (million), but I've never heard of using billion as trillion...

Plus, it does make sense. You need a name for a 1 with 9 zeros, 15 zeros, etc etc.

They do have a name for it, it's something like million, milliard, billion, billiard, or something dumb like that.

We are fools for not using the metric system, I'll give you that, but when it comes to millions and billions, your kind is just daffy. Nevertheless, since we Americans are good sports, I will trade you a billion dollars my count for a billion dollars your count.

KalessinDB wrote:You guys are making me sad. When I was a kid, I played for a few years. I was decent enough, for a... I dunno, 10 year old maybe when I stopped? But I never wanted to play piano. I had wanted to play guitar, but my parents convinced me to learn piano to learn to read music (which was bunk, for one you generally don't read music for guitar, for another I already was decent at it from singing). So I did, for I want to say maybe 3-5 years? I dunno, it's fuzzy.

And I quit, because at the time I didn't want to and was basically being forced to. And, predictably, I regret it now.

My parents have a beautiful grand piano at their house. Couple keys have chipped ivory, but on the whole it's a great dust-gatherer now.
I hear ya. I too went from piano to guitar. I went years without practicing piano, but getting good at guitar. I finally decided to stop living in regret and bought my digital piano. I still don't practice it as often as I'd like, so I'm still not where I wish I was with it, but I'm definitely better now than I was.

When asked something like, "How many instruments do you play?" I like to respond with something like, "I play many instruments... None of the well."

Have I told you lately how much I love you?

And superb biceps Bone!

Random story: Took my dog Ripley on a walk this morning and noticed that another guy was walking his dog who was plopping a turd on a neighbor's yard. Guy didn't clean it up and acted like his dog didn't just shit next to someone's mailbox.

!CONFRONTATION!

A surly old bastard this guy was.

I was very...nice. Just a "Yo! (I"m one of the very few white guys in their thirties who address people with the word yo) What would you think if someone pooped (I actually said pooped) on your lawn and didn't take the responsibility of cleaning it up?"

His response: Fuck you.

For some reason I woke up at around 3am this morning, drank a London Fog, couldn't get back to sleep, so this incident happened at around 5 or 6 am. Didn't have the nerve, energy, or wit to reply with anything intelligent nor machismo to punch the asshole in the stomach.

So instead, I cleaned up after his dog, followed him home (from a distance) and placed the shit in the middle of his Sunday paper.

Would have put the crap in his mailbox, but I've heard that can possibly be a federal crime (just staying on the safe side).

Was the flaming paper bag on his front porch not an option?

I'm a man of invention ;) Here's the kicker I didn't mention...

He has a UNC flag outside of his house. At least 4'x3' if not bigger. UNC lost to Notre Dame for the ACC Championship. Placed his dog's turds on the sport's page. Well, it was a bit smushy, so some of it may have gotten on the "funnies" as well.
