Saving would have been nice in that one, I don't think it had passwords?
But I played it on the Wii U this last time, so I broke it up into 3 sessions I think and it felt right. One full session, it does feel a bit exhausting by the end.

4? It has the standard CV password system.Xeogred wrote:Saving would have been nice in that one, I don't think it had passwords?

Re: Castlevania Appreciation Thread
So I beat Bloodlines for the first time on the hard difficulty using John Morris. Like most early CV games, the only thing that was hard about it was annoying placed and/or never ending bats and some faster enemy movement. Death didn't have ANY meat cards (he has 2 or 3 on easy and 1 on medium difficulty) but since I just played the game three times in a row I had his patterns down pat. Everything else was about the same.
You know one thing I really like about Bloodlines... The candle sticks. The regular double stick candles will be jewels, money bags, weapon upgrades, etc. But single candle sticks are always only weapons. This is fucking fantastic! If you have the weapon you want, then you don't even have to bother with those candles. Not like in other CV games where you have to whip the candle first to find out what it is, which can end up getting you into trouble at times.
So I'm replaying CV4 right now and I had a thought...

(sorry, I couldn't find a larger image)
So look at the map, specifically the path for level 2. It goes down the waterfall to the underground caverns. I think they might have intended to have the path split at the waterfall. One patch going down, and one continuing on. If you look at the map, it really looks like that could have been the case. And perhaps the paths met back up after the two-head dragon. Maybe they decided the game was too long and decided to just make it one path? Or ran out of time?

Re: Castlevania Appreciation Thread
I noticed that too, it clearly looks like there should have been two paths there.
Re: Castlevania Appreciation Thread
And especially since it was right after CV3, which made branching paths a thing. Perhaps they ran out of time, it was a pretty early SNES game.
One thing that I noticed playing CV4 this time around was how dull the fight with Dracula is. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome that Simon's Theme kicks in and Drac's face changes. But I wish he would morph into a huge demon or something, like he does in most other CV games. It makes the fight seem kind of lame by comparison.

Re: Castlevania Appreciation Thread
So I just played through Bloodlines about 4 times, just played through CV4, and I'm still in the mood for some 16-bit Castlevania action. So I decided it's time to replay Dracula X on the SNES.
It's been a while since I've played it. This game actually has great music and graphics. This game would have been fucking fantastic if only it had better level design. The level design and over use of spear guards is what really kills this game for me. Some one needs to make a level editor for this game! Hell, I wouldn't even change it too much. I'd keep a lot the same and just alter the parts that suck. Like, for example, make the fight with Dracula take place on a level surface instead of fucking pillars.
A while back I remember reading about and watching YouTube videos of a hack in the works for Dracula X. The hack aimed to take the game and more or less turn it into a 16-bit version of CV3, which I thought was awesome. I haven't heard anything about it in years though, I wonder if the project is dead. edit: Never mind, I think I was talking about "Super Castlevania III," which looks like it's on the PC. I must have confused that with the Trevor hack for the SNES game.

Triple post!
Well I just beat Dracula X. I made sure to not fall off the platforms in level three (I had to put that password in a bunch of times!) so I could play the other route. The last time I played through the game, I wasn't enjoying it enough to bother putting the effort in. But after playing through it now, my opinion of it has changed. It's not so bad, it just could have been better.
Being that my opinion has changed about Dracula X, and I semi-enjoyed it, I think it's time to give Castlevania Chronicles another try. I made several attempts at Chronicles and it just never clicked with me. But after replaying Bloodlines, IV, and Dracula X, I'm in the mood for some more 16-bit CV action.

Well, that's good to hear! After all of the complaints, I was worried about whether I should take the time to get to this one. I may fire it up later in the year and make a concentrated effort in it.Ziggy587 wrote:Triple post!![]()

Castlevania 1; is there any point to trying to continue after losing a life? Or are you pretty much boned and better off restarting?

Oh, it's definitely worth playing if you're a Castlevania and SNES fan! Really, my only major complaint with the game is the poor level design. Most areas are just really boring and uninspiring. If the game had levels on par with CV3, 4, Bloodlines, etc, it would have been a GREAT game. Everything else is there. The graphics are great, the music is good. My only other complaint, although minor compared to level design: Bosses could have been a little better. With a lot of them, it just feels like they didn't put a lot of time into perfecting their patterns. And I hate the HUD. I hate that you have to pause to see your score and lives remaining. I hate that the heart count is constantly blinking. If someone hacked the game and made a proper CV HUD for it, I'd be all over it.Ack wrote:Well, that's good to hear! Why would you be boned after dieing? There's infinite continues, so the worst that'll happen is you start at the beginning of a level instead of a checkpoint.MrPopo wrote:Castlevania 1; is there any point to trying to continue after losing a life?
