Where To Get Region-Free 'Pirate' N64 Backplates

Post by grandta13 »

I would like to know if there is any place where I can get region-free backplates for N64 carts, that will allow them to be inserted into any un-modded system. The type of thing I'm talking about can be seen here:

Notice how the bottom has room for both the Japanese and US tabs.
To be clear, I am looking for a cover that I can screw onto an official N64 game; the backplate from the pirate cart pictured above wouldn't work because it has fake 'screws' to make it look more authentic at a glance.

Why not just use a Game Genie if you don't want to mod a system?

You can interchange any backs if you don't want to mod your system.

The "mod" takes less then 5 minutes start to finish - 4 minutes of that is removing the shell and screws.

How's about a region-free "underplate" ? :P

only to play my only JPN N64 game!

I think the origin of my adapter is much more interesting.

A pass-through adaptor could work. Which would you recommend, with reliability and price being the main factors?

As I said, you can use a Game Genie and just don't bother with any codes. It should be the easiest to find and probably the cheapest too.

I couldn't find any information about a Game Genie for the N64; a GameShark, perhaps? The reason I asked about reliability is that the GameShark has been known to fail (though I think a certain version can be restored using an interface on the rear) and I wan't sure if that was the most reliable for the price.

Yes, he meant Gameshark. I use one for my imports. Just start the game without codes (it's one of the options), and it should work. However, it may be possible you need a newer version (~3.0 or above) for some later released games, and even then, you may also need to use master codes which allow you to play the game (the only time you need to use codes for imports).

You can tell which version the Gameshark is with a sticker that's put on the cart by the manufacturer, Interact, but if the sticker's been removed, your next bet is to look at the features of the cart (label color, back serial port, etc.) or plug the cart in a system with a game and turn it on. When booting to the main menu of Gameshark, I believe it'll state which version it is at the top of the screen.

Yes, I'm a doofus. That's what I meant.

I use a GG for my Genesis imports, and while I've held onto a GS for my meager N64 collection, I haven't picked up Sin & Punishment yet. So I was thinking of the Genesis.
