I get why, and the games do stand alone, but the aesthetic shock you mentioned wasn't one I experienced because of what came before in Quake 2 (which is more sci-fi/industrial).
Am I right to assume that Hexen/Heretic are closer in spirit to the original Quake?

PS, I think I <3 iD.
Kind of, in that Quake has more fantasy elements, but Heretic and Hexen are way, way more into the traditional dark fantasy setting, and the world in Hexen is interconnected in a way similar to Quake 2.

As for the plot of Quake 4...yeah, it's a continuation of Quake 2's story, only through the eyes of Doom 3. Also...don't get too used to that squad. Just saying.

word. I left off getting picked up by a spaceship, so I believe I'm now at the Nexus hub? It def has that "confined to dark hallways" Doom 3 thing going for it (so far), but like I said, I am finding it quite enjoyable.

Sort of. More magic, less guns. I'd be interested in revisiting these at some point. In this series I have played through Heretic and about half or so of Hexen II...and that's it.

Inside the chest of every true member of the PC master race beats a heart full of love for id. We all know in our soul of souls that id>Valve, Sierra>Lucas Arts, SSI>Blizzard, and DOS>Windows.

Speak for yourself. id Software games ripped my heart out years ago, and now in my chest beats a hideous mass of mechanized steel and biological horror full of love for id.

Also, I was the guy who nominated Hexen for this year's TR as opposed to Quake. Just saying...

That was a mistake then, but would be appropriate now.

And yes, that love of id generally doesn't extend past 2000 or so. Since then, it has been largely unrequited.

I will take that as the closest I will ever get to an apology from you.

I would argue it's even further, with Quake 2. Really things start to slide when Romero left. id was at their best when both of the Johns were running things, and though they released Quake 2 after the split, I think it was the final hurrah as everything went downhill from there.

I think Q3A was a high point, too. Really Doom 3 was the first time I played an id game where I had any feelings of disappointment at all. I like Doom 3...but it was uneven and non-exceptional by id standards.

Dave, you're not enjoying Quake Live?

The videos of Rage I watched actually make it look sort of awesome.

I do like Quake Live, but it is really just Quake 3 in new garb. I don't think of it as a new id thing.

I need to try Rage again. I played it at release, sunk an hour or two into it, and kept getting all kinds of bugs. I lost some progress due to crashes and what not, too. This was a long time ago, and at least one PC ago.

That said, I remember that what I played felt like a pale Borderlands imitation.
