But anyway. Everybody has their own criteria for beating things and this isn't Twin Galaxies. So just take other people's "beaten" with a grain of salt and move on with your day.

I think this is a much better topic than the original thread title.

Maybe some with infinite continues that put you back at the beginning of a level but I can't think of any that let you infinitely start where you died.Ack wrote:Chief, the hardest shmup I've ever beaten is Axelay. Re: Game collecting is not what it once was
I thought about making a new thread with a poll about what "beating a game" means to each independent voter. But then I realized no one would vote in it just to spite me for caring that much.

"Channeling my inner TSTR"...
Dumb thread is super dumb...and no cheese. Where da cheese at?
Christ people. If you cheat you cheated. Sure Bill Cosby fucked some women, but when he cheated with drugs he cheated. If you use help, it's not pure. If ya read Cliff notes of a book, same thing. What's all this nonsense about breaking things into to categories? You either beat a game clean or ya don't. Anyone with a level head never has to ask "did I cheat?". For fucks sake.

I gotcha, pal. Hitting continue is putting in a credit. Yes, I realize that some console ports specifically give you 3 or 6 "credits", that is almost always exclusive to a console port and not necessarily indicative of the original game design. In fact, this can be specific to region, the US version of a game will sometimes have more credits than the JP version, or the difficulty on the SNES version is set lower than the SFC version. Most games will restart your score if you continue, or put a "1" as the final digit - specifically to notate you did not clear the game as intended.Ack wrote:Chief, the hardest shmup I've ever beaten is Axelay. To us, your claim that we haven't because we can't even begin to wrap our heads around the game for a 1CC or have the time/energy/capability/desire/skill to get to such a point is also demeaning.
I don't think credit feeding through a game is beating it. It doesn't meet my definition. Truly, i'm sorry if that opinion is demeaning, but i'm not going to not share it either.
I am nowhere near the level of player some guys are at, but I would absolutely roll my eyes if someone puts Deathsmiles on their "beaten" list and they used multiple credits to do so.
I have a lot of love for the shmup genre - so while I can see it can (unfortunately) come off as "hardcore, arrogant, or elitist" - that is not the intent...at all. The intent is to say, "Listen, these games have as much depth and require as much time and skill as most RPG's, strategy, FPS or other genre. Please don't put in an hour and think it can go back on the shelf again - there is more to it even though you've seen the credits. Would you put Fire Emblem Path of Radiance in for an only an hour and feel like you experienced all of it? No, right? So, my brothers, believe me when I say you have not experienced [insert shmup] in 30-60 minutes."
I think the word beaten maybe should have never been used and it distracted from the point of the conversation - which is to say, just because your backlog consists of RPG's does mean it should be more daunting than a backlog of shmups - the playtime needed to experience them properly is likely quite equilibrate.
My goal is to always bring people into this genre - I see people say things like they could never wrap their head around it all....well, for anyone who knows my gaming habits, my attention and time is very limited, so if I can get around it, truly, anyone on this board can and I personally, would love to discuss any shmup with you - in detail.

Ya know, it's funny; being that this is exactly the type of discussion I would have had with gaming buddies in junior high, I have to conclude that, well yes ... game collecting is the same as it's always been. And I wouldn't have it any other way.MrPopo wrote:I think this is a much better topic than the original thread title.
Re: Game collecting is not what it once was
Maybe that's true, but sometimes console ports are compromised compared to their arcade brethren, so one could argue that they're often not even the same game.
Also, given that Axelay is a console exclusive, I'd say it was the designers' intent for the player to use those continues. So I'd definitely say it was beaten if you didn't 1CC it.
