I have not played Dishonored. I actually don't know much about it.

I haven't played any Serious Sams either. Or Thief. So yeah - a lot of suggestions and I still plan to dig into Quake 4 first...

BTW, how do all these FPS games compare to RPG's and shmups?

NOLF2 was still good. Operation JACK was not supposed to be though. Not exactly available anyway.

For a newer game, have you played Dishonored yet noise? Seems like it would be something you'd like based on other more modern FPS you did.
He needs to play Thief.
He needs to play a lot of things.

Call of Duty, Unreal, Serious Sam, Red Faction, No One Lives Forever, Soldier of Fortune, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Blood, Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Painkiller, Alien versus Predator, Alien versus Predator 2, Rise of the Triad, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Postal 2, Descent 1, Descent 2, Descent 3, Clive Barker's Undying, Thief, Thief 2, Deus Ex, Heretic, Hexen...noise could be busy for quite a while.

Can't imagine what Maxim readers would find enjoyable in that game...
I can't imagine there are Maxim readers!

I don't know about the modern "Thief" remake, but the original Thief games are not FPS. They are stealth action adventure games that happen to be first person.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Ack, I have played a bit of the first Call Of Duty... and then Advanced Warfare.

I played quite a bit of Duke Nukem 3D.

Oh and I've played Alien Vs Predator and Alien Versus Predator.

He has mentioned being a PC gamer during part of that era, I thought. Perhaps is was just click-n-point nonsense that he spent time with? I'd assumed he played some of these already.

Good list, though! Happy to say I've beaten or spent considerable time with almost everything on it :)

I was a PC gamer until probably around 96 or 97, yeah. But really the only FPS stuff I remember playing back then was Wolf3D and Doom, and a handful of shareware "Doom clones" that I really can't remember names of.

While I was into PC gaming at the time, I'm not sure I was really keeping up with current releases except in the case of promo's (my stepfather at the time worked at Circuit City), which is how I played stuff like the CD-ROM re-release of Loom, or Wetlands. But a bulk of stuff I was playing was shareware stuff (Jazz Jackrabbit, FTW) or older DOS games.

Man, this is making me nostalgic for dat old Gravis gamepad.

Hey man, if you want to go old school FPS, we could always look into Ken's Labyrinth, Catacomb 3-D, or MIDI Maze...
