Is Gamestop Evil? The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

@Bone
They were starting to make me work like all weekend every weekend, which is annoying when that's the time I use to spend with friends and family. Couple that with the fact that I was only getting a couple 4-hour shifts a week at minimum wage ($7.25 here in NC), and it just wasn't worth my time anymore.
@Popo
It's honestly not that bad of a gig, but maybe more suited to like high school students or college kids who have a lot of other stuff going on besides the job. The people I worked with were really knowledgeable and nice, though. I also wanted to give it some time after only being a "seasonal" employee to see how well it meshed with me. I have learned that retail is just not my bag, man.
@flojo
You know, I never really experienced the smart-ass customer. There was one guy that I sold to a couple of times who thought that he was the coolest thing since sliced bread, but he was actually fairly easy to deal with. I'd say my least favorite customers were the ones that seemed not to give a shit what their kids were doing while in the store, and the ones that didn't give a damn that their 9-year-old wants to play GTA, despite me telling them about the rating and what the game contained.
I will tell you the story of the weirdest encounter I had there:
I helped this young effeminate man one day with some purchases. Everything was alright until it came to actually buying the items he wanted, an XBone game and a charge cable. He didn't seem to register the fact that I was telling him the total, and that he didn't have enough money for everything. But, no big deal. After taking off the charge cable, we eventually got it all straightened out, and then his mother comes in to help pay off the rest, bitching at the young man for taking so long. They finish the transaction, in which I was nothing but pleasant, and leave. 5 seconds later the mother comes back in and asks to speak to me. She says,
"I don't appreciate the way you treated my son. If you have a problem with gay people, that's on you being ignorant."
Instant WTF mode. I managed to say, "Ma'am, I don't have a problem with gay people" before she cuts me off, saying she saw what I did (whatever that may be) from the car. The car. Outside. Away from the window. The ASM on duty at the time attempted to tell her that he saw/heard nothing untoward, but she wouldn't hear it, and then she stomps out of the store saying she's going to write the company.
Still have no clue what that lady's deal was.

So today I learned that not selling someone a charge cable means TSTR has a problem with gay people.
Re: Is Gamestop Evil? The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
TSTR figured he wanted to use them as makeshift anal beads and was having none of it.Ack wrote:So today I learned that not selling someone a charge cable means TSTR has a problem with gay people.

I bet the problem was that you asked him...
...if he wanted to be a member
...if he was going to be swapping anything in
...if he would like you to charge him
...if he wanted to pre-order a Final Fantasy game
etc.

Re: Is Gamestop Evil? The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Very well said Sarge. Local shops trying to one up ebay on pricing highs is a bad idea. Few fall for it, and it keeps a lot of good stuff just stuck on the shelf, and in time less good new stuff comes in to replace it. I've been watching a former favorite local shop around here fall into that trap and the same stuff just perpetually sits for over a year or two (or longer) and never moves. I'd like to think the reason they can get away with it is they have enough filler in the 2 for 10 or 1 for 6 pile along with the crap load of books, movies, and comics/graphic books and d&d like books around they don't really care. The place used to have this insane turnover of quality in that you could go in like 1-2x a week and see new stuff that went in and out at good prices. I've been back here nearly 2 1/2 years now and half the gems on the closed off shelf has been there since I returned which is pathetic. If the pricing was like a few years earlier I'd have bought 1/2 of it to try out. It's not like they were giving it away, but it was good enough that if it was a turd I could turn it over on ebay and break even after fees so I didn't care.
Re: Is Gamestop Evil? The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
This is actually another reason I quit. Trust me, I hated the badgering at the register just as much, if not more, than when I was just a customer.dsheinem wrote:I bet the problem was that you asked him...

Re: Is Gamestop Evil? The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Well here is how evil Gamestop is. Till the 15th I believe for only Power Up Rewards members you get 50% additional on a console trade. That means for a non working PS2 without controllers or hookup you will get a 30 dollar store credit. I am sure many of us have busted non working PS2. The only thing they will turn down are systems with cracks in them or busted off parts.
I hated Gamestop till I started going. They may do some things we do not like but they do some really good things too. I have a busted PS2 for one a day till it ends! 150 bucks for what would otherwise be trash LOL.
