You know, I'm thinking it may be time for Squeenix to revisit and remake some of the classics. And I don't mean remake as in make an HD remix. Look how they remade Tomb Raider. Time to use Human Revolution aesthetics to remake the original Deus Ex, retelling the story in a way that blends better with the more modern Deus Ex story. Same for Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. We need new titles that are just called Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. They need to be complete re-imaginings of the original scenarios, with modern graphics, a modern take on the classic mechanics, and short, sweet, and to the point.

Honestly that sounds..... really awful. "Modern graphics" makes me cringe. The appeal of the classic Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy games is largely due to the "old school" graphics, chiptune music, aesthetics, etc. The remakes that we've already had (GBC, GBA, PSP, etc) have been sufficient and a lot of the annoying kinks (excessive grinding in DQ, the insane leveling system of FF2) have been worked out.

I can't say I'd mind seeing another FF or DQ collection on Vita or 3DS. And I certainly want to see more games in the style of Crystal Chronicles or 4 Heroes of Light.

To be brutally honest, we that are still holding a candle for DQ X are just a bunch of sad fools. Coincidentally, we're more than likely the same people still holding out for Shenmue 3.

A Dynasty Warriors spin-off isn't indicative of getting any of the main series single-player games; much less a full on MMORPG. I'm sure some will disagree with me, but then again I admit I'm incredibly pessimistic when it comes to video game companies with neglected franchises. :P

When I say modern graphics, I don't mean make it look like XIII or anything. I just mean use more modern graphics technologies and really pump up the level of detail. I really don't like their more recent design aesthetic. I think they need a distinct change there.

"Now's your chance to tell Square Enix you want that proper Final Fantasy VII remake."

Ugh.

Hate to see how that game is still held up as Square's crowning achievement and the pinnacle of RPG design.

And am I the only one who clicked LiveJournal when asked what social media you use?

I see it as the beginning of the steep decline in Square's RPG design.

Final Fantasy already tends to re-invent itself every installment though.

I'm not really a fan of the fad with reboots of movies and video games. If you're going to give me something new, just make it something new.

Though to be a hypocrite I wouldn't mind if they did it with Front Mission because the planned story arc of that series ended with 5. That said an HD release of that game in English would be most welcome. Hell, just pay the guys who did the fan translation and it's already good to go.

Front Mission had a DS remake, right? I know little about that series, though I did pick up the first installment shortly after I got a Retron 5.

Yeah, the resulting games may be hit or miss depending on the audience, but perhaps that's kind of the point.

I suggested offline FFXI  Mostly because that, and XIV:ARR, are overlooked by a lot of people that would really dig the world/characters/lore due to being online. At this point though, XI has NPCs you can party with in a lot of the content, and it'd be pretty feasible to retool/streamline into a solo offline or standard multiplayer game.
