Re: Together Retro: The Quake Series / Quake Live -WHEN TO P
I finally made some progress in Ground Zero! I just beat the first unit (of five) and I've snagged a couple of the new weapons. The proxy launcher is just a grenade launcher that doesn't bounce, instead it sets indiscriminate proxy mines. The ETF Rifle is Quake's Nailgun (exact same sound and everything), but something I've noticed is it's better off saved for the slower big guys like Gladiators because enemies in Quake 2 are narrower than in Quake, making it much harder to hit them with a thin precise stream.
I've also discovered just how much it sucks to fight against the first new enemy in the game. It's the same size and shape as those dogs that drain you, but these guys fire a high powered green laser and can jump from the floor to the ceiling (and usually start on the ceiling). They also take three super shotgun blasts. Very annoying.

Here's a cool iD Software retrospective:
(Rage actually looks pretty awesome to me).

I'm in the home stretch on Ground Zero. I've got this unit (which consists of two maps) and then the final unit which is just the final boss fight and I'm done. I've got all the weapons, the Power Armor, and I've still got a Quad banked for the final boss. I'm hoping to be able to push through and finish this tonight.
Edit: And finished. The Power Armor definitely made things much easier, and then the final boss, being a two parter, had the Quad saved for the second form and it went down after 3 or 4 BFG shots.
So my general thought is that the balance on this game is rather poor. It starts off by tossing a lot of advanced enemies at you while you are still in scrounging for weapons and ammo mode. Once you finish the first unit life gets better, but at the same time you run into TURRETS.
FUCK THOSE TURRETS.
The turrets are a nasty combination of small, beefy (three rockets or two railgun shots), damaging, and crazy accurate. The turrets have the most advanced AI of anything in the game as they will properly lead you. They also like to hide on ceilings and walls where you're not looking, up to and including hiding behind a false panel until you run past them to a trigger point and they shoot you in the back. Did I mention half of them are rocket turrets?
These guys were what drained the majority of my health over the course of the game. The Medic Commander wasn't nearly as bad, and he spawns in an army. The Medic Commander doesn't appear often and he goes down to one BFG shot (which tears through everything he's spawned).
The game has two bosses, one at the end of unit 3 and then a final boss. Both bosses spawn minions, but since you're tossing around BFG shots it doesn't really matter.
Also, the game is nearly over when you finish the first boss. The first three units consist of 3, 4, and 4 levels. The fourth unit is 2 levels and the last unit is just the boss fight.
So now I've beaten every Quake game and mission pack.

Are there gib sessions going on this upcoming week? I'd love to have some friendly multi-player fun-times if it's in the works.

So... I got bored and took a look at a couple of Let's Plays for Ground Zero, then reloaded my last save.
Yup, I'd been playing on Hard, when I normally do Medium. It seems some of my complaints about the difficulty were a bit misplaced. But not all of them; Turrets are still utter bullshit and the difficulty in Quake 2 simply affects the number and kinds of enemies you face. Everything else about said enemies stays the same (bosses get more HP, but all other monsters are unaffected).

That was. I had no idea about a lot of the stuff in there. I forgot Half-Life ran off the Quake engine too, albeit modified.noiseredux wrote:Here's a cool iD Software retrospective:
Did a Team Deathmatch on Quake Live tonight too. We lost but it was as good as an FFA match.

alright so I'm up to the last level of Quake now. Brutal, but I'll wrap it up soon I'm sure.
