I think we can all agree it would pretty much be illegal to NOT include Green Hill Zone from Sonic The Hedgehog in this list. That tune is one of the coolest on the system.

On top of that, though;

Emerald Hill Zone (2-Player version), Chemical Plant Zone - Sonic The Hedgehog 2

Angel Island Zone - Sonic The Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles

Vectorman Theme - Vectorman

Pretty much any song from Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose. Can't pick one.

The first level in Animaniacs.
This user really likes SEGA Saturn. Avoid at all costs.

It's hard to play that tune. Brings me back to the easier days and makes me wish I was a kid again. :(

Its not Batman-y but that's no reason to hate it. That's what makes Batman so awesome. You can do so much different things with him.

Nolan's Batman and Burton's Batman movies and Frank Miller's Batman weren't Batman-y either by definition, but they are still awesome.

Streets of Rage title screen theme is straight up phenomenal:

Phantasy Star II and III also have excellent openings:

And here's a track from PSII that may be the catchiest video game song of all time:

Overworld theme from Phantasy Star IV:

Ending theme to Exile:

"Passing Breeze" from OutRun

Everything from Ys III is awesome. Best track:

Finally, Marble Zone!

Who else has ripped off their shirt while yelling Power-Up! to this blood-pumping club jam?

I KNOW I HAVE!

Was just listening to some of Splatterhouse 2's soundtrack. Good stuff.

I am impressed by how much I like the Two Crude Dudes/Crude Buster soundtrack on the Genny. I never thought Data East was a musical powerhouse, but this is making me want to rethink.

All of it.

Seriously, I can't believe how much love Kyd poured into this track. I am in love.

Relentless, pounding love.
People whine that it doesn't fit Batman.

Screw those people.
My take is that it's not a BATMAN soundtrack. It's a GOTHAM soundtrack. Seriously, every track in the game just captures the complete fucking lunacy, danger, and RAWNESS of that effed up city. You hear those songs and think, "I don't want to be anywhere near that fucking city."

Great topic, the Genesis doesn't get much love for its music. I'm probably repeating some people with a few choices, but some tracks are just universally loved by people.

Shinobi 3

Whirlwind

Idaten

Mandara

Earthworm Jim

New Junk City

Snot a Problem

For Pete's Sake

(Buttville: The Descent)

Earthworm Jim 2

Anything But Tangerines

And here's the fucking AMAZING PS1 version:

Gunstar Heroes

Stage 1 - This is some heroic sounding shit right here, like the fucking cavalry just arrived.

Stage 2

Seven...Fucking...Force - Pretty sure hearing this gives some people nightmares.

The Adventures of Batman and Robin

Dark Studio

Animal Boss

Space Boss (Mad Hatter's theme) - This sounds like the soundtrack to losing your mind.

Streets of Rage

Attack the Barbarian - I hear this and picture two street gangs about to throw down.

Beatnik on the Ship

Streets of Rage 2

Title theme - Ridiculously epic and dramatic, used to leave this on repeat all the time

Go Straight II - I think this actually blows away the first stage music from the first game.

Dreamer - Fun track

Under Logic - Possibly my favorite track in the game

Slow Moon - Both games have awesome boat themes

Mad Max - One message comes through loud and clear in this track, you're about to get your ass handed to you

Subterrania

Level IV (Enemy Lines)

Level V (Enemy Lines II)

Contra Hard Corps

The Hard Corps - Bad asses incoming

Format X

Last Springsteen

Sonic 3

Ice Cap - Act 1

Ice Cap - Act 2

Sonic & Knuckles

Death Egg Zone

Sky Sanctuary

Lava Reef Act 1

And now for the game's most EPIC tunes:

Act 2 Boss

Project Chaos Remix

Final Boss

Project Chaos remix

Doomsday

Project Chaos remix

Castlevania Bloodlines

The Sinking Old Sanctuary

Iron-Blue Intention

Panorama Cotton

Stage 1 The Land of Cotton

Midnight Resistance

Flood of Power

Alisia Dragoon

Stage 1

Amazing Remake

Revenge of Shinobi

China Town

Batman

Gotham City Streets

In the Sky Over Gotham City

Gotham Cathedral II

Mega Turrican

Stage 3-3

M.U.S.H.A.

Sonic Spinball

Toxic Caves

Boss
