Advice on buying the new 3DSXL

Post by Snatch1414 »

Hey everyone, wanted to get your thoughts since I am unsure what to do here:

I bought the Mario & Luigi Dream Team 3DSXL right around a year ago, so I'm having a hard time buying another 3DS so soon even though I do want the newest model just to be current if nothing else. My original intention was "Let the temptation pass, and be patient for a LE version you really want, then pull the trigger."

Not an abnormal way to go about it I don't think, but I'm just worried that after some more time has passed my current 3DSXL will be worth far less than it even is right now. With the new version out I am seeing 3DSXL's on Craigslist for $120 with multiple games. If I wait too long this thing I bought not too long ago will be worth maybe $75 I fear.

Basically the longer I wait the more expensive a new model will be for me. Typical problem I guess, but all in all what is the smartest way to go about it given my current 3DS honestly isn't that old? Do I even NEED the new one? Lastly, if/when I do get a new one I'd prefer to trade in my old one and have the data transfer done but holding on to it maybe I could get a bit more on Craigslist, etc.? Thanks

Do you enjoy the 3D aspect of the 3DS, but you have issues seeing the 3D on your current 3DS XL? If so, yeah, get a New 3DS XL. If however that's not a problem, then no, don't get a New 3DS XL yet.

Some will argue the analog nub, the extra processing power, the extra shoulder buttons are key features. Yeah yeah yeah, but none of that really matters until an amazing exclusive game comes out that has to have those things exclusively to play. I doubt such a killer app exclusive will ever release for this platform honestly. I for one am just fine with my 3DS XL and 2DS and I have zero personal impetus to buy a New 3DS XL simply because it's yet another "latest and greatest" iteration of the 3DS.

The updated 3D effect alone is worth the purchase price. I have always used 3D, but it was a hassle to stay in the sweet spot on the XL. The new XL 3D works perfectly and I don't even have to think about it. It also helps immensely with games that use gyro controls.

The other features are minor.

I sold my black XL for $160 locally. Just do it.

Haha that's what I was afraid of. The new 3D was the one thing that got me thinking about taking the plunge. It seems worth it. Only thing is at this point I know I will kick myself when an LE model comes out that I either really want or comes packed with a good game........

Keep your 3DS XL and get a new 3DS as well. I have the same Mario and Luigi model and it is gorgeous. I am going to use it for playing old school DS games to cut down on wear and tear on my New 3DS.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Like you said there will be a LE verision of the New 3DS that you will want more and that will provide more value. I honestly don't see the old 3DS XL dropping that much in value anytime soon. They even still sell it in stores new for $175. Reselling it for $100-$120 shouldn't be that hard, especially the version you have. I say be patient and get something you really want soon enough.

Personally I'd wait til they release another limited edition vs getting a black or red; unless you want to pay Xenoblade when its released. As far as getting rid of your current one, I can't say much I still have the original aqua 3ds and the Mario & Luigi 3dsxl. I do enjoy the new 3d and amiibo support cause waiting for the adaptor that will prob turn out like the gamecube controller adaptor.

If you don't care about other special edition systems, then figure this. I was able to sell my CIB standard red system alone for $130 a week ago online. Craigslist is a lowballers hell since it's supposed to be a garage sale online so I wouldn't read into the $120 with a stack of games much.

That said, what bothers you about the one you have now? Do you like using 3D but hate sitting there like a robot so it doesn't get all double vision on you? Does the slow response time of everything from the menus, the eshop, loading of some games, and the browser bug you? Would it make you happier having better brightness handling, cleaner/louder audio, and a little bit better battery life? And finally, do you want to have a built in second analog stick(nub) and 2 more buttons on top making it like a normal gaming controller?

If you answered YES to much if not all of that, then get it. If that doesn't mean much to you, ignore it until it has some games you want it only runs.

If the PPI was drastically increased I would buy a New 3DS XL in a heartbeat. That's all I really want but Nintendo won't do it.

That's probably why I'm here as I'm kinda of split on caring about the new stuff. I've gotten used to the 3D, but an upgrade would still be welcome. I didn't know the volume was louder but that was a gripe I had about mine. The faster speed would be a perk but that's about it. The buttons I don't care about and frankly I wish handhelds were simpler because Ithink that's part of the purpose they serve.

My inaction is probably an indication of where I'm headed. I can't justify a plain one now and an LE later, and I have the box and all inserts for my current one so like you said getting $100+ for it probably won't be an issue.
