By now if you buy somewhere that has regular turn over I don't think it would be a problem. If you bought after market, there's a way to tell by the size of the box. I've had both, but I don't have the older box anymore or I'd snap a comparison as the original box is slightly larger and because of that the font/sentence layout on the back is aligned a little differently.

I have no idea if that story about old/new is bs with gray/black. I started with a gray that failed, then went through some drama and stupidity with multiple units (2nd = DOA, 3rd = Factory assembled wrong with wires over famicom cart slot pins!) The 4th I have now since they ran out of gray is black, prefer it now that I have it. The gray I do recall the boxes coming in both sizes too so it may not be the best tell of old vs new. The black unit was made later than the gray so odds are far better to have the solid unit on that one.

Does anyone know how much I should be paying for a Super Famicom? On ebay they all seem to be around $100 but I'm not sure if that's just ebay and should be paying less somewhere else, or if that's just how much they go for.

I really can't seem to keep track of consoles prices so I have no clue ><;

Oh my gosh where do I begin? Feels like a real SNES pad, the buttons and the d-pad press like a real SNES pad, and the turbo/cancel switch is very handy. Easy to set up too. Just have to try it in a SNES emu now.

So I was opening up some of my SuFami carts to see how dirty they were (can't clean them yet but I was just curious), but my copy of Megaman X seems to have a wire on the back of the board... I thought that was supposed to mean it's a bootleg, but I'm not 100% sure and I can't find any info to confirm or deny this ><;

Does anybody here know about this sort of thing?

There have been consoles that had suspicious looking additions that came from the factory like that. Genesis and SCD model 2 for sure. It's possible that a game might have one too. The US one would have probably had some board revision before being made, but since the Japanese ones were first, it might be legit.

Yep, spot on.

No, that definitely doesn't automatically mean bootleg. That type of thing isn't uncommon.

Another common misconception is that glop tops automatically mean bootleg, but that's far from true as well. In fact, the pic that I used as an example of glop tops is actually an early Star Fox PCB.

If in doubt, post a pic of your cart PCB and we'll be able to confirm if it's legit.

Ah ok, I didn't know about that. I knew about the glop top thing (I've seen a lot of people talk about that ha) but no one really mentioned anything about wires so I wasn't sure. I'll put a pic up just in case though.
