Games you stopped liking

Post by ZeroAX »

Have you guys ever experienced really liking a game for a long time, and then suddenly not being able to enjoy it no matter how much you try to force yourself?

I'm not talking about games you played as a kid, loved, but they aged badly. I'm talking about games you loved for a long period of time, and then suddenly you stopped liking.

For me this happened with 3D Zelda titles. I loved Ocarina of Time, Windwaker, enjoyed what I played of Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess....and then I got bored of the entire 3D Zelda series. Not just bored...every time I tried to replay a title, I just cringed at every bad design decision and all the "fat" that exists in the series.

Another game was Little Big Planet. I used to play it like crazy for 4 years and then suddenly I can't play a single level without quiting of boredom.

I honestly can't understand why, because those were games I had very fond memories of, and really enjoyed replaying but now every time a sequel is announced I just look at it and skip it.

Anyone else has stories about unexpected changes in taste to share?

hope there isn't a similar thread, because it's impossible to search for something which would have a very generic title like mine

I'd possibly have to say Zelda as well. I've had Skyward Sword for years, yet I've never even made it as far as the first dungeon. I bought the remakes of Wind Waker, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, but I only finished Majora's Mask 3D (and that felt like a chore). The one Zelda game recently I really felt I have enjoyed is A Link Between Worlds and even that I haven't found the motivation to finish it yet.

I used to be a HUGE Zelda fan.

The biggest one to be another on the list with people is Zelda.

I have others I don't like anymore even when I try. Mario Kart, Yoshi, mostly if not totally Kirby(not sure yet), and aside from that there are others, but those are the biggest let down.

Stuff like Mega Man (original), Gradius and a few others that had later releases down the line like MM9/10, Gradius 4/5, much of the 3D Castlevania stuff since Legacy of Darkness, and things like that the changes and shifts to how they work I do not like or downright hate.

With the Nintendo stuff, Mario Kart turned into a sad rerun of itself converted into some Mario Party on wheels that more and more focuses with online which drove me off for both reasons. Yoshi the games I think just never were as good as the first, and the latest on 3DS was just so boring I couldn't play more than a couple worlds. Kirby I like that 3DS game, the Wii one(late) was fine too, but there have been a few poor or weird ones and even those I like I can't motivate myself to play them to finish.

Zelda is just the worst, it took to the shitter entirely after Wind Waker, though Majora's Mask started to make me question. The DS entries have some sketchy controls and the first is one giant screwing of backtrack hell always going back to re-run the temple a level lower so it was just annoying. Twilight Princess is too vast for its own good, lots of empty space, and a junky save system that lost progress if you didn't do the classic 'enter a door/dungeon/cave' to create a spot yet the story was nice. Skyward Sword again great story and atmosphere, but too much backtracking and the control scheme while 1:1 is nice got boring and tiring if you played it long enough as I felt less immersed and more worrying about where my arm was going so I quit around 60% into that. Now you have this new Zelda being 'open world' and I care not for Skyrim-ish like games, the 3DS being a taste and I feel lost playing it without using a guide and the new WiiU game is so huge an inch on pad screen is like a 15min walk on the TV and it has a do whatever go wherever attitude I don't want. I like the 'feel' of it like Link to the Past or Minish Cap had, but you really needed to progress a specific way.

but for you it's more like you just don't like the newer entries or think the original games aged badly.

I'm talking about games you USED to like, even as an adult, and then suddenly stopped.

For example I don't think OOT aged badly, I just stoppped liking the game design.

Usually I end up appreciating games more over time, not less.

The obvious picks would be some complete garbage 2600, DOS and NES titles that I experienced Stockholm syndrome with as a kid because they're what I had to play and I had to make the best of it.

The only high profile example I can come up with is StarCraft. I was obsessed with that game but now I don't care for the RTS genre much at all and haven't even tried StarCraft 2.

That's where you're partially wrong. Maybe I should have worded it differently a bit. I do like some of the somewhat newer entries, verdict is out on Kirby on 3DS. Mario Kart 7 wasn't bad either I just got tired of it quick since I don't do it online and it's very focused on that. I used to actually like some of the various releases back when they were fresh but I dislike them now for whatever reason. I get reading back it was more 'I just don't like this' but it wasn't that way so quickly once I bought it, it evolved. I used to like non-8bit style Mega Man games here and there like Legends 2, Network Transmission, and a few others but I can't touch them now. MGS Twin Snakes I didn't mention I used to love, can't stand trying to even attempt finishing it anymore, same with stuff like Skies of Arcadia. I just focused too much on franchises I've turned to dislike as I've become older. I think this issue is you see them new they're nice, but you go back a second time and find they're really not as fun as you remember or you just conned yourself in the day with the full dollar invested to realize it's junk or kind of junk.

Easy answer. Sonic Heroes.

I loved the game when I was a kid, and in my teens. It was one of my favorite Sonic games. I found barely any issue with it.

...And now, I can't even get anywhere past the first two levels, because I just literally can't play the game THAT long. The teamwork aspect is exceptionally confusing to work, and I am just not a fan of how long the game itself is. I give the game some credit for being a nice representation of how a Classic Sonic game could work in a 3D environment, and I do kind of like it; it's just literally everything else about the game keeps me from liking it. Keep in mind; I'm talking more about the Gamecube version. The PS2 version is borderline unplayable, IMO.

I almost put Sonic Adventure 2, but that's more of a, "This aged badly" game to me, and I still fairly enjoy that one. Sonic Heroes just wins by a landslide.
This user really likes SEGA Saturn. Avoid at all costs.

This might be an "aged badly" situation but I'll say the Mortal Kombat games, especially MK2.
I loved this series when I was young and MK2 was my favorite. Especially since I had the awesome 32X version as opposed to the "kind of okay" port of MK1 on Sega CD and "way less than stellar" port of MK3 on Genesis. (Later on I got Ultimate MK3 on Saturn.) I beat the game as multiple characters. I unlocked hidden stuff. I practiced the special moves, Fatalities, Friendships and Babalities.

So part of it is that the game has aged badly, but man I do not care about playing those games anymore. There's a part of me that still thinks there are some cool elements to the games (I mean, I'll always have a soft spot for those ninjas and the games' finishing moves) but playing Mortal Kombat now feels like a TOTAL CHORE.

Well, I am some that kind of fit.

I will concur with the Mortal Kombat games. I enjoyed them before, but they don't do it for me these days. Same with the Street Fighter games. I was never a huge fan, but would play them with friends.

Most RTS games. These only somewhat count. I still like them, I just like them less than I used to. I remember when Red Alert 1 & 2, C&C Generals, Warcraft 2, and Starcraft were some of my absolute favorite games. I can still enjoy them, just not at near the same level I used to.

Goldeneye is another. Though, to me, this might be a case of it aged poorly.
