Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I do not like Underground Gamer rant!

Post by andythebadass »

I do not know where else to post this but i thought i would vent a little about my experience with the site. I am so frustrated trying to use Underground Gamer! First I get on the site, read the rules (all god damn 25 pages or whatever), and then I pick a good torrent to download making sure that I dont go over 5gb limit. I then proceed to try to let the torrent seed, which there are a good number of ppl already seeding but there are more leeching. I end up getting 3.3gigs worth of data and I have only been able to share 22mbs after 72hrs. I have a the fastest connection time warner has in Dallas and I seed other torrents regularly at 250kb/s. This is so frustrating because I dont want to push my luck and download much more and I do want to be able to enjoy what the site has to offer.

Then I see if you make a $20 contribution to the site then you can have VIP status which can not be demoted... which I guess means not get kicked off. That seems like a money making thing to me considering there are like 10,000 users.

Then I make a torrent just for the site and upload it. But because my description wasnt elaborate enough it got taken off! I had the list of games, how they were compressed and instuctions on how to extract them. Very annoying considering I am a new user and I was trying to share/ participate in the community.

All in all I am very frustrated with my experience so far. Has anyone else had an experience like this with UG?

I have had uploading issues also. I just concluded that it was the large number of people already seeding the torrent.

Blah blah, its a private torrent tracker. Put up or shut up. Sorry, but that's how it is. I haven't had any trouble uploading 160 gigs, and keeping a ratio above 1.2.

It can be tough uploading on there sometimes. When a golden torrent weekend comes around get something big with alot of leechers, like one of the dreamcast collections and seed it like mad. That'll give you a nice leg up. Till then just don't go crazy downloading stuff, there's tons and tons of small games you can get on there. Just be patient, I think it took me over a year to get my ratio over 1.

Way to be a douche-bag as always Mozgus. Really, put up or shut up? He mentions his experience with the site and his frustrations with it, despite going along with everything that entails it being a private tracker. You do quite your share of bitching about things you don't like, yet when someone has a less than satisfying experience with something that you enjoy or have success with, its "put up or shut up;" what the fuck. And clearly, it seems as though he tried to contribute and not just be all over the place downloading anything and everything. I would call that putting up, but what do I know I'm not lord mozgus who has uploaded over 160 gigs (omg!!!1111) while keeping a ratio above 1.2 ...

Edit- Whoa, I didn't catch how much you had downloaded at first. QUIT DOWNLOADING IF YOU CAN'T UPLOAD, throttle your dl way down and grab some new torrents when they come up so you can get some seeding done, and wait for the next gtw.

i feel the same way really
I can download a full game(dreamcast) within 3-4 hours , yet when i want to have sharing ethics , i keep my computer on for 12 hours and all I upload when i am extremely lucky is 120 mb or so...the full game is 800+ mb....
Next time I did the same thing I only managed 20 mb...

I cant help keeping my membership active this way at all, So i decide not to download much...by that I mean 1 game every 2 months.

If i have to pay $20 and i have unlimited membership , I guess that is a better option

Dude, don't download at 100%. It's easy.

This tracker is not hard if you aren't a leeching idiot.

Put it this way. If you download at 250KB/s and only upload at 25KB/s it's going to take you ten times as long to upload to maintain a 1.0 share ratio. That's considering you are going to get people downloading from you. With so many hundred seeds per torrent it's going to be hard to share, since the way bittorrent works if there is only 10 leechers and 100 seeders then only 1/10th of total bandwidth is going to be used per client. So if you've gone wild and downloaded at full whack for ten minutes it's going to take you an hour and a half to upload (if you are lucky).

The key to UG is to never download faster than your upload speed. Download a very popular torrent (IE, the DC ones or the golden GOODROMS sets) even if you don't want it. Getting these are the most surefire way of ensuring you stay on the good side of the tracker.

I also support what Mozgus says. Either put up or shut up. Basically, you have to follow the rules, if you don't you get kicked. Let's face it, you are getting something for nothing. You don't have a right to download any of these files. They are provided as a free service to enthusiasts in the retro gaming community. If you want to take the easy way and pay, then that's your prerogative, they'll take your money without question. They need it to help maintain the site. Personally, having another leeching moron on the site just makes it better for everybody else who wants to share properly.

I would just echo what some of the people here have been saying. You need to be patient and take it slow at UG, you can't expect to build up a ratio overnight or just throw together a torrent and not have it deleted. I live out in the sticks of Maine on a DSL connection and I've still managed to keep my ratio healthy and leech the things I want.

I think it's important to keep in mind how incredible UG is. You can get a huge variety of retro things for absolutely free. The standards of the community works to ensure that torrents are of a high quality and not full of viruses. Would you rather be on some hit and run public tracker where you could be getting anything? And if you think the rules are draconian, I've heard that Blackcats makes UG look like a paradise.

Take some time to learn the rules and be thankful for what you've got.

If you getting a shitload of games out of it, I'd just pay the 20$ for no hassle lol. Win win too because even though your not helping give the files out, your helping the site stay up.
