Scratched discs

Post by TheGameFan »

Why is it that almost every non-PS3 game I buy used "in the wild" is horribly scratched? Whether it's a yard sale, thrift store, Game Stop, or pretty much anywhere else, it's scratched. The only good discs I have are ones I bought new or ones I paid a premium for on eBay.

Do people not put their discs away when they are done playing? At a minimum, it seems easy enough to put the game in the "wrong" case, then switch them back when you get a chance.

Does everyone else here have the same luck with used discs? It's a shame because most have nice looking cases and manuals.

That's why 95% of my Xbox 360 games were purchased new. I have about 30 PS2 discs I bought new, but they're getting hard to find now.

PS3 discs and BRs are really hardy. Usually it's just a streak of dirt that will wipe off witha soft cloth.

Many people do not take care of their stuff. This is nothing new. Records, cassettes, VHS, carts, CDs, and DVDs. They've all had a history of being put down on the floor or coffee table, falling under the bed, sliding around under a car seat without a case in August, rattling around in a backpack, or being thrown like a frisbee by toddlers. Then of course there are those of us who take care of them and put them away when we're done with them.

I think most of us here take care of our stuff and those are the ones that end up selling for a premium on eBay. The general populous doesn't seem to have the same regard for their games though. I used to think it was just kids, but I think the average gamer is around 30 now.

I lent a booklet of dvds to my friend cause he didn't have cable. When I visited him a week later his roommate had taped them to the walls of the living room and was using them for target practice with a bb gun.

Most people don't consider owning video games for an extended period of time and arn't considering the fact that someone else may play the game after them. They just want the initial dozen hours out of it and then hopefully sell it off, regardless of it's condition because Gamestop only cares if it plays or not. As a kid, i'm sure I was guilty of leaving games out and not putting them back in the case when i'm done. It's funny because I'm always onto my nephew about putting the discs back in the original cases and taking care of his games. I'm sure I come off as a bit of a hard ass, but I took pretty terrible care of my games when I was a kid. On the bright side, it's the experience that the games provide that matters to them, not the condition of the media itself. Though it's obviously hand in hand.

Out of revenge, a friend and I shot his neighbors copy of Marvel vs Capcom on the original xbox (of which he had lent me) with airsoft guns, shattering it. I still feel so guilty about it to this day.

What in the good crap goes through these people's heads??!

1: You're shooting a bb gun in your living room?
2: It's at something you don't own?
3: It's at something your roommate doesn't even own?

Like seriously... I cannot fathom being that much of a scumbag. I just can't.

I find this weird too. I mean if I spend $50 on something I take care of that $50.

Yes, if I find a used game "in the wild" chances are it looks like it had a mud wrestling match with a cheese grater. This is why I just pay the premium and buy the games new off Amazon or pay a higher rate on eBay for mint previously owned games.

It does baffle me the incompetence of those who treat game discs this way, and also the fact that people lose manuals so often. It is not difficult even in the slightest to put the disc or manual back in the case when one is done with them.

Well you're in luck; a digital-only age for games is on the way! ...but that also means once it's no longer for sale, that's pretty much it. Whoops.

This is why I don't like lending my stuff out, most people don't take care of their things. Most people think it's OK to put a disc data side down on a flat surface, but I know this is just asking for trouble. Why not just put it back in the case? Is the case too far away? Did you take the disc out of the case and then walk into another room with it? Why would you do that? The case should be in arms reach of whatever you put the disc into!

Don't even get me started on the way people treat cables. I hate loaning out cables even more so than discs.

I had a Ghostbusters 45 hanging on my wall in my old bedroom for a while. It was in perfect order, I just didn't have a sleeve for it so I hung it on the wall for whatever reason. My brother shot a BB gun at it, he said he was trying to hit in the center of the record. But instead, he hit the record and took a chunk out of it.
