NONE OF THEM!

Just kidding. I just think that moving from Thrash Metal to Death Metal because the former sounds generic doesn't make much sense. There are plenty of Death Metal bands that sound like Cannibal Corpse for example.

I should've have stated more melodic like arch enemy, amon amarth, cof. What i meant by generic, i asked for a few recommendations couple years ago in this thread for some thrash. They were ok, but the next slayer or pantera wasn't walking through that door. I had thought thrash died years ago with nu metal so moving on might be the wrong term. I'm older so i was looking for some good bands to relive the thrash gen lol.

When I was a teen I was into this canadian technical/melodic death metal band called Quo Vadis. You might enjoy it.

Tons of creative and interesting death metal bands. I feel like I've barely scratched the surface of that genre.

I really hear you on this. For instance I really dig Toxic Holocaust. They nail the look, vibe and attitude of old school thrash. Heck even their playing is on point, but the vocals sort of kill the thrash vibe for me. It winds up being thrash/death hybrid which is great but certainly not a throwback to the days of yore.

For that matter I think most of the best thrash being produced today is actually hybridized. Skeletonwitch plays fantastic thrash riffage, but mixes it up with blackened vocals. I raved for a minute about Exmortus up there but in truth they blend thrash riffs with power metal leads (and gruff vocals to boot).

I think part of the issue is that a lot of modern and up and coming metal bands are afraid to embrace clean-ish vocals (outside the realm of more cheese-tastic strains of metal like power and prog) Sure rough vocals have existed in thrash since practically forever, because ... early Sepultura, but I think when most people think of that classic thrash sound (i.e. Slayer, early Metallica, Megadeth, Exodus, Anthrax, etc., etc.) they also think of the clean vocal stylings associated with those groups.

I love death growls and blackened shrieks as much as the next metalhead, but it would sure be great to see a real thrash band with properly sung vocals every so often. OTOH Municipal Waste has the whole throwback crossover thrash scene on lock (and Iron Reagan if I'm being exceedingly generous, but really if I wanted more D.R.I. I would just listen to D.R.I) so maybe I'm just not looking in enough of the right places.

Thrash Metal died with the rise of Grunge, Hip Hop, and the end of the Cold War, or the Reagan/Bush presidencies. It came back during the next Bush's presidency and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, but as those died down, the thrash resurgence died out too.

I like thrash because it has some incredible musical talent combined with the energy and attitudes of punk. It's ridiculous, it's energetic, it bitches about power and war and then goes and has a good time getting wasted and punching some guy in the face. I've stated before that good thrash metal makes you want to break a beer bottle over somebody's head. And a lot of it knows it is ridiculous and dumb and does not care.

Unfortunately, this makes for a lot of forgettable music, the sort of thing you are meant to drink heavily to, get mad, and then completely black out about in the morning. Way too much of the resurgence was self-referential, even by bands I enjoy(I love Gama Bomb and FKU, but they really do talk too much about thrash metal). And there were a lot of old bands coming back together that probably shouldn't have and should have just let the energetic younger bands become the standard bearers.

That said, I still found new bands to enjoy out of it, be they the more famous groups like Municipal Waste and Havok or the considerably lesser known groups like Pessimist and Fog of War. And yeah, Ex Mortus too(Slave to the Sword was the last metal album I bought before Aaron convinced me to jump to Spotify). It sucks that there won't be new awesome thrash albums to check out. But that's ok, because I suppose it's time to sit back from the thrash bender and nurse a hangover.

Doom metal is the hangover.
