So Cracked made a list of the 11 worst fantasy weapons...

Post by Ack »

Honestly it was pretty funny, and some of them have appeared in games, so I figured...why not share?

I went in expecting the gunblade to be on this list, and I was not disappointed.

Has Batman ever used the Baterang as a boomerang? It should really be called the Batblade or even Batshuriken...

Well, he has arched it like a boomerang to disarm multiple villains in the comics and animated series, and in some of the games, they have operated as boomerangs...

Im pretty sure Batman stopped using the batarang as a boomerang in the 60's
Throughout the 90's they were almost always shuriken.
In Batman Returns he does have the programmable Homing Batarang, though.

Ahh yes, the Gun Blade. How the hell can the Gun Blade be a usable weapon in any universe? Other than the facts laid out by Cracked, Squall pulls the trigger after he cuts an enemy. What the hell's the point? He's already been split in half!
Cracked.com wrote:Sure, you could say the same about the cool two-bladed lightsaber in The Phantom Menace, but at least that could deflect lasers.
That and it can be thrown using The Force. :)

Gun blades do exist. They're called bayonets.

not quite the same though... the bayonet is far smaller, and the barrel doesn't run the length of the blade. A bayonet is also removable. Also bayonets are placed on rifles, not revolvers. Though it was common that gutting a man required the rifle user to clean his rifle before using it as a gun again.

What always bothered me about swords in fantasy stories is they usually held the idea that all swords are razor sharp and light as a feather. As if everyone is running around with a katana. But there is a reason the katana is a single sided blade... so there is somewhere you can place your hand with out slicing yourself open. These fantasy swords love to mix the sharpness with absurd weapons like the double bladed broad sword. What the hell??? The broad sword is a dull as my pinky finger. It gets its power through it sheer weight. The dullness of the blade merely slices because all the pressure behind it forces it through the persons limb... usually only shattering bones and not even cutting it off.

I thought the entire point of the bayonet was as a last resort

That was actually the entire basis of Gatsu's fighting style in Berserk. Probably why I liked it so much. I remember him saying something to the effect of "You're going to wish that this thing would have simply cut you in half."

It was

had to do with when bayonets were used the rifle men still stood in lines like bowmen back in europe did for centuries earlier. If the front line got that close on you, the weapon really had no use anymore. But a line of blades 20 yards across and 10 feet deep is pretty freaking strong.

Though the revolutionaries of America really spruced up the use of the bayonet with some strange tactics, but usually the tactics involved removing it from the rifle. But then again they're the same guys who went on and invented the practice of "sniper rifles" in the Civil War. Keen little buggers we were.
