The question was useful for the entire forum.

Anyway, while you don't know anything about therapy or psychiatric medicine, in a way you probably are right that they wouldn't help you right now. Any therapeutic treatment requires a client who is open to change. You are holding onto your unhappiness like it's the family jewels.

I miss The Fresh Prince.

For what it is worth, and I'm dead serious:

Forlorn, find a club with an open mic and put together a five minute stand up set.

Don't worry or care about destroying nor bombing, as you will make friends for life backstage
that will be life changing. In my experience in the game of life, you can't find another group of accepting and loyal people as those that you find in a green room. So accepting, so friendly, and you are all in it together.

Well, there are some assholes, but comedians will actually GIVE you their jokes to use.

True story: I was at a Chicago talking backstage to this James Franco looking mutha, and I was nervous as a squirrel on a frozen pine branch. Guy said "Duuuuuude, if I was you, I'd walk out with my hands behind my back and ask what's the sound of one hand clapping, and then clap your hands".

It's a terrible joke, but that broke the ice and every joke I told from there on killed.

There are some dicks, but dude. Try stand up. I'm serious that in that field your peers so want to see you succeed, and the rush that you get out of a laugh is second to none.

Cheers'k'boy.

It's only insulting if you are close minded about it. The brain is just like any other organ, and it can get sick/need a professional's opinion to work better. Behavior is all electricity and chemical reactions. If you have a weak heart nobody thinks you are useless, so why should people think badly of someone who needs medical attention for his brain?

I too have been through a depression and sometimes still go through mini ones (hence my "hair trigger" behavior sometimes here, which I really regret and apologize for), and wish I had seeked help when I went through my big one.

I also miss the Fresh Prince, and that joke is amazing. As I have gotten more active in Toastmasters, people have started suggesting that I should try standup or improve, so I have been considering taking a class on it for fun at one of the comedy places around here.

Improv is great for helping you improve your stand up routine, and also helps if you ever get heckled. Plus you'll meet people who can help punch up your jokes.

I'd suggest writing a three minute set, practice it for a few days, and go to an open mic. Not saying "don't be yourself" but remember that you are writing for your audience. And before you go onstage ask the other comics what they think about your material, as they'll help out, or in my case give you a hand.

But do it. Seriously. You'll regret it if you don't, and once you get a certain age you might feel too old to go on an open mic stage.

Don't mistake what I said as some sort of support for the stigmatization of mental illness. 'Cause it sure as heck ain't that.

My point is more that unfortunately what very often happens is that "seek professional help" is used as code for "I find you difficult/unpleasant to interact with, therefore you need help." Being offended by that is understandable.
