I'm being tempted by this thread, but guess what, Nintendo is playing their childish antics of the Wii era with the New 3DS I found out doing some investigating this morning.

I was following up on my story out of curiosity that I wrote on Digital Press the other day about the New 3DS so I decided to check just how wide spread it was or not.

Guess what, it's not.

The metro area is well in excess of a million people on this side and the other of the river next to Indiana. As of less than 24 hours on the market, all supply of the system has been sold. Gamestop and also backing that up Best Buy is reporting that Nintendo only sent out a limited supply of systems to fit preordered demand, and everyone else got a spare unit or a few at most. Places that didn't pre-sell like Target ended up with just a few, and second tier stuff like Meijer in the area only ended up with maybe 4 units on average if that.

Everything is gone, and supposedly the Nintendo rep told the Gamestop guy that it was done on purpose to stir up demand and get more people wanting the system. More will be on the way, but they will trickle out if second tier places are getting just a few at best. Nintendo is playing the opposite of how they did the 3DS with a blowout and going back towards the Wii with playing their bs scarcity games to make sure the systems move which is in my feeling, disgusting.

If you aren't some shelp that lives for feeding companies your money in advance (which I refuse to do) you won't get one unless you're lucky. Again time for another big middle finger to Nintendo who claims they had no idea this stuff would move as well as it did.

Old tricks are the best tricks. Nintendo is a for-profit company. It is to their benefit to stir up demand. Why shouldn't they?

Nintendo failed to stir up demand for the WiiU, and investors practically threw a fit when the first years harware sales fell below projections. Conversely, stirring up artificial demand for Amiibo figures has made Nintendo a mint. If you worked at Nintendo, which course of action would you prefer?

I don't trust anything involving Gamestop. For some reason they under-stock Nintendo products. For several Nintendo game releases, I went to my local GameStop on launch day to pick up. I get asked, "Did you reserve a copy?" When I say no, I'm told, "We had 3 reserves and we got 5 copies in." Or something similar to that. I then go down the road to a local Wal Mart, Best Buy, whatever, to find MANY copies of the game in the display case.

When I hear "supposedly the Nintendo rep told the Gamestop guy" I automatically assume whatever I'm hearing is BS.

Pretty much.

Pre-order, and do it at more than one merchant. Or rather, buy now ask questions later.

Tanooki, if your issue is in regards to Nintendo's businesses practices, you really can't blame them. At least they take input from their customer base. I would argue they're not cutthroat through and through.

Yep. My store got 12 systems in stock. Other stores in our area received between 8 and 16. According to you and your guy who talked to a nintendo rep they should have gotten MAYBE 4.

9/11 was an inside job. Alien abduction is 100% real and I rub crystals on my genitals as a natural form of male enhancement. A nintendo rep told a guy I know that was the case so it must be true.

I'm in New Hampshire so I'm right there with you. :( To top it off I was bedridden with the Flu last week and it developed into pneumonia so I'm still somewhat bedridden. I'm in no mood for anymore winter.

The stable 3D on the NEW Nintendo 3DS is pretty awesome. It really makes me want to play Luigis Mansion again.

It's not an issue for someone like myself who plays their handhelds in a stationary position to begin with. If I was sitting on the subway with the device being held in my lap maybe it would be a different story.

I wasn't trying to insinuate that people who had problems seeing the 3D before were somehow intellectually or genetically inferior to those who don't have problems with it. I was just trying to find out if somehow the actual 3D effect had been enhanced, or if the head tracking is only about keeping the sweet spot dynamically synced to the user's eyes. Now that I know it's only about the sweet spot syncing, this isn't really a system buying killer feature for myself. It's going to take some really great New 3DS exclusives to make me buy yet another 3DS. Keep in mind I say this after already owning a 3DS XL and a 2DS.

Yeah I can't argue that one. The only real benefit that I have found outside of the improved 3D is the improved load times for games like smash bros. and I am assuming Project S.T.E.A.M. and maaaaaayyyybbbbeeee the amiibo support. If E3 comes by and Nintendo is like, "This is our exclusive New 3DS lineup!" and you are bombarded with a bevy of crazy good titles, then things may change. I am also not in the, "Gotta Buy it," camp, but I do think the head tracking 3D is genuinely awesome.

That's how I play too though. But without trying to sound condescending, I do like to sometimes maybe move my head a bit or scratch my ear or something. I don't know, maybe it's just a minor thing for some people, but I just think it's cool that I can look at the screen and it is instantly 3D. No looking for a sweet spot, no effort, I just look at the screen and there it is in 3D.
