Endless Ocean: Blue World
Man oh man am I loving this game. The ocean and its creatures at depths are ever fascinating, I am an explorer at heart. This game is alllll about exploring, filling out maps, finding new creatures, recovering treasures. Just like the first game! Except now there's more variety to the places you go, and there's a very tangible plot line with lots of characters interwoven. Actually there are a whole host of upgrades to the gameplay. You can make your own character, level up your diving skills, buy new equipment upgrades... it's kind RPG-ish... there's even a plethora of optional sidequests. Hell you even get your own dog in this game (if you find it).
The biggest upgrade has to be that you can now leave the ocean and walk around land in the new environments you find. If you want to play something truly special nab this one (and its predecessor) pronto. Yet another amazing experience on The System That Has No Games™. Some screenshots because the pixels:
From The Abyss
A DS dungeon crawler that got pretty "meh" reviews. I understand why, "it's too simple". The thing is, this game was obviously meant to be simple. You make a character, you talk to some people in town, you go to the dungeon, crawl the dungeon, kill kill kill, get loot, level up, kill the boss, go back to town, buy new gear, rinse repeat. This might sound familiar because in a small way this game apes Etrian Odyssey (again to a small extent). However the presentation is overhead... think Secret Of Mana. I'm not saying From The Abyss is awesome, but I'm saying if you just want a straight forward super simple dungeon crawler this is that. The one unique aspect is you can steal new powers from enemies you fight, kinda Kirby-style. It adds a lot of variety to combat. Some screenshots:

I attempted From the Abyss a couple of times and quit partway through. It's not bad, I just found it somewhat mediocre and dull. Awkward controls too. Children of Mana does things similarly but much better.
Though given how much I love action-RPGs it wouldn't surprise me if I someday revisit and complete Abyss. Seems like a good game to take on an airplane or something, which is where I first played through Children of Mana.

Every DS Ys game is in English...
The standalone DS versions of Ys I and Ys II are Japan only, but were later combined for Legacy of Ys: Books I & II which was released in the US.
Ys Strategy was never released in the States but has an English PAL version.

It's an interesting port. Similar to the PSP version of I & II but with optional (and awful) stylus controls, a map screen, and slanted pseudo-3D graphics. The OST also sounds a bit different than the other ports.
I dig it. And the map is really helpful in certain dungeons.

DS might be the way to go with Ys II because you'll actually have a map for the Palace of Solomon, the insanely elaborate final-ish area.
