Yeah, Animal Crossing. It was such a huge deal at the time. What are its pros and cons to being added?

Honestly, I don't see why Animal Crossing isn't on the list. Without it, you wouldn't have the others. It was fairly niche only to Japan, then bam, you have a game that rivals the Sims. It's a quality game, it has NES emulation built into it. Even though I have all of the other games in the series, I still revisit this one more than I do the DS or Wii versions.

I personally can't stand Animal Crossing. It's such a mundane and monotonous game. Everything about it made me want to throw the game out the window and smash the disc into a million pieces.

Agreed. I can't see its inclusion when the best argument for it so far is:

you have a game that rivals the Sims
what's the opposite of "high" praise?

My sister came over last night and I threw her a party for her birthday, I told her I mentioned her in this topic and how she loves Animal Crossing but is not a gamer, collector etc. so I asked her the question does it belong. She said "Oh gosh yes, my village probably has all weeds growing through out it by now"

I can't see the argument for Animal Crossing as far as Gamecube goes. Didn't you need an entire memory card free just to save? Bit of a pain.

Yes, that's correct, but the game did come with a free memory card, to be fair.

I guess, putting aside my opinions and being objective for a second, the question should be whether the Gamecube entry is still worth playing today or has it been surpassed by later entries in the series? I wouldn't know personally, what with the game sucking so much, I've only played the Gamecube version.

Does the GameCube version of Animal Crossing belong on your shelf?

It is a solid game and still offers enough unique features that the argument is worth having. A series of fully playable NES games to uncover was a fantastic feature, but cut from every subsequent release. The GameCube-GBA connectivity was pretty cool with eReader support and collectible cards, and an island you could visit. Also, this release was the starting point for a popular and successful game series, so there is always that legacy argument.

But I wouldn't recommend it for most people is because later revisions are incremental improvements. While a few features have removed (most notably, NES games) the newer releases generally offer more things to do and improved interfaces for doing those things. So while the GameCube original might be a landmark game, it's not one that I recommend most people play any longer - every subsequent game has improved the series and rendered older versions obsolete.

Some people are against Animal Crossing just because they don't like the series as a whole. That's an entirely separate argument.

(FYI: My wife and I have (together) played every version of the game, hitting 100+ hours with each entry. She agrees with me that the 3DS release is the best one yet, although is officially off the wagon and feels no need to do the same stuff over again.)

I bought a 3DS for New Leaf. I came really close to getting a Wii just for City Folk (until I heard from fans that it wasn't worth it.)

Animal Crossing rawks.

fuck all y'all
