Yet another 3DS model announced - the NEW 3DS
Re: Yet another 3DS model announced - the NEW 3DS
Even more important question looking at his post up there, did Nintendo really think that naming out in the least bit? He got a new 3DS that isn't a new 3DS, but it's a 3DS, yet not really as it's a 2DS that plays 3DS games.

Aesthetically they are cool, but I've heard the later Crystal versions have lesser quality LCDs than the original models. So I just went with Electric Blue to be safe.
@Tanooki - Nintendo clearly does not think when they name new products. Or is that New products.

Re: Yet another 3DS model announced - the NEW 3DS
To be honest, Nintendo's recent system names aren't bad, they're just too clever. I think most people whom are enthusiasts and are complaining about the names are mostly being obtuse. Because, it's Nintendo and you're suppose to make fun of their names ad nauseam.
At least they try.
I don't think New 3DS is a necessarily bad name, I believe in Japan the word New is actually used in branding a lot. Nintendo has also spent a few years cultivating it outside of Japan with Mario games. New Super Mario Bros is its own franchise now, and the "New" has been successful enough they've used it in other games too, like Yoshi's Island.
I think Nintendo's 3DS numbers probably tell them the 3DS is at saturation already, so really the only market there is for a new model 3DS is existing owners. And calling a 3DS a New model is the easiest way to convey that to people whom already have one. Calling it plus, for example, would make it sound like an auxiliary upgrade, and unnecessary. Calling it New makes it sound like you have to get it.
And I can only imagine the outcry if it was called something like the 3DS 2.
At least they try.

At least from what I recall, certain types of products (like cars) can wind up with a lot of extra words like that on them, so they can wind up sounding like a version of Street Fighter IV.
"New" is still just a bad word choice because it causes confusion. You can have a Super Happy Paradise Love edition whatever, and it can still wind up being distinct from other versions of the product.
'course, it might also be something that's only really that apparent or annoying for English speakers. For folks not using "new" to describe the condition of it, or how recently it was introduced to the market, and only as part of the name, it may read differently.

New 3DS is a stupid name outside of Japan, it's culturally out of vogue. I'd had been happier with "Super 3DS" or "3DS DX" or "3DS Beefy Love Cakes".

I would buy 2 of those.
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!

And Super 3DS is culturally in vogue? What nonsense. Might as well call it a 3DS Ace or Rad 3DS. Sooo 90s.

Okay then, howabout you offer something constructive and positive, like your own idea for a better name?
The "Super 3DS" would at least hold a historical reference (nostalgic nod) to Nintendo's past products. The company is not beyond such things if you noticed:

At least Super 3DS wouldn't confuse people talking about buying a new 3ds or buying a 2nd hand new 3ds which in fact is not new, but used, yet called a new 3ds.
I just got a new 3ds! You got that one with the better 3D and little stick? What, no I got a new 3DS. So you bought an old 3DS? What?

Re: Yet another 3DS model announced - the NEW 3DS
Nintendo needs to stop with the "New" naming scheme. They don't realize that it's confusing? Super 3DS would have been a zillion times better, even if it isn't the best thing to call it. It conveys what it is just fine, and wouldn't be confusing if you mentioned it to someone who has yet to hear about it.
