Anyone try windows 7 yet?
Re: Anyone try windows 7 yet?
I went ahead and installed 7 on my main PC. I was starting to get curious mostly about the game performance. So far I can say that L4D runs much worse
, TF2 runs about the same, and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 no longer has the shadow flicker issue it did on my XP. I'm having no real trouble installing anything, although Windows didnt successfully install the first time, complaining about ntoskrnl.exe missing, but it turns out formatting the drive first fixed that. I just assumed the installer formatted the drive you select to install to.

Very interesting and brave of you. I appreciate your insights into the new Windows and am now considering trying out the beta.Mozgus wrote:I went ahead and installed 7 on my main PC. Few days with 7, and I can say that EVERYTHING I have runs better, excluding my wireless usb adapter which does not work at all for some reason. TF2 has a 2x framerate improvement (30 to 60 fps avg), Bioshock is about the same, HL2 is no problem. Im going to run 3dmark soon and see how it improves over vista. I am using a difrent partition from my vista computer, so same hardware, but 7 screams!

Re: Anyone try windows 7 yet?
Haven't tried it but based on what I'm hearing regarding memory usage and game performance/compatibility there is a strong chance I'll buy it once it hits retail.
Re: Anyone try windows 7 yet?
I don't see how it's much better than vista... They've implemented a severely limited version of exposé and they've completely ripped off the dock from OS X. I prefer the old way windows worked.
I dunno if it's just me but I don't see any performance increase at all. It runs exactly the same as vista. It looks the same apart from the god-awful 'taskbar' thing. I hated quicklaunch and turned it off on every previous version of Windows and now i'm tied to it? That windows peek thing is completely useless. Currently I see no benefit in Windows 7 at all and definitely don't think they should be charging for what is barely a service pack let alone an upgrade. XP SP2 brought much better improvements than Windows 7 has to Vista and SP2 was free...
No doubt somebody on here is going to tear me a new one and lecture me on how Windows 7 cured their mother of cancer and that it's the second coming of christ. I don't care. I don't like it.

Niode, there are plenty of legitimate reasons why 7 still sucks, and you somehow missed them all. Everything you listed is just personal nitpicks.
Anyway, I may be heading back to XP simply because overall, my games run much worse. A couple ran better, or were cured of XP issues, but most now have microstutters all the god damn time and I don't know why. I turned off superfetch, indexing, scheduled defrag, and so on. If Microsoft cant understand that performance is key, they lost a sale from me. Considering that this is the exact same problem I had with vista, I doubt they will fix it in 7.
Also all .bik videos in games are mute. Tons of PC games use the bik format. This is not acceptable. I think DX11 broke something.
And I have found games that won't run properly, like Savage 2 and Far Cry 2. Savage 2 only boots if you completely disable UAC, and FarCry 2 only displays if you enable a bunch of compatibility modes and even then it randomly blacks out.

I hope this isn't the start of another Moz v Niode windows mac fight. I hate those.Mozgus wrote:Niode, there are plenty of legitimate reasons why 7 still sucks, and you somehow missed them all. Everything you listed is just personal nitpicks.

Why would it be?
We both dislike windows 7, just for different reasons.
I might give windows 7 a few more chances before I rubbish it completely but if this is all it has to offer over Vista then Microsoft is deluded that they can sell this as a new operating system. I know it's only beta right now, but let's face it, this is pretty much what we're gonna get. When the OS gets it's first service pack I may have a look into it as a replacement for XP/Vista, if it improves on the performance of vista then it may be a worthwhile upgrade.
At least it doesn't take as long as Vista to install and has a little less bloat. There's still quite a lot of time for Microsoft to fill it's bloat quota though.

Windows 7 will make for a good casual OS. I'd trust it in the hands of relatives. But I'm fairly certain that if I want to continue PC gaming, I will have to stick with XP, or completely overhaul my machine.Niode wrote:Why would it be?

Microsoft does need to hand out 7 as more of a paid service pack, or they need to offer very generous rebates on upgrade editions from Vista. If I was a legal owner of Vista, I would never pay the expected $200 for 7. I don't care how good it is. It's still like 90% Vista inside. But there are a ton of very smart (but late) refinements under the hood. You don't notice them until you start digging. All this shit should have been in Vista to start with.
Edit: Also, I found a tool that fixed the muted FMVs in games under Windows 7.

Actually it did not even occur to me to try out the new windows 7.
