Handhelds > consoles > PC

Can't get excited about Persona 5 though. Those games are bloated and tedious beyond belief. I do like the old 8/16-bit MegaTen games though.

Everything about your statement is wrong.

Man, how can you guys like having your neck like that for hours on end? Even 15 minute games'll give me neck cramps. Thank God for Vita TV.
The great part of having a handheld is you can bring the screen to your face.
So, you just hold the damn thing up in the air the whole time?

Don't your arms get tired? I know mine do.

I love the Vita's OLED screen, but I pretty much only use it when I have no choice but to use it over the Vita TV. (Gravity Rush, in particular.) The lack of ability to play 3DS games on a monitor (affordably, anyway) is the number one reason I haven't got one yet.

When I play a handheld I'm lying on the couch on my back, which puts my elbows at my side/on my belly which makes it easy to keep the screen near my face.

Mario is already perfect and never improves.
I think that is an interesting assessment. Look at games like Luigi's Mansion or Captain Toad. There is so much personality there that it is overflowing. Mario titles have always been less about mario and more about the platforming mechanics. The last Mario game that gave him character was Mario Sunshine and you saw how well that was received.

I feel like they have relied a lot on Mario just being Mario, the indestructible hero that his personality falls to the wayside. Other characters though shine, like Yoshi and Bowser and Luigi etc. in a way that helps push them into the spotlight from time to time.

I also find it strange that I think people get more excited for the sub-genre mario games than actual mario games. People were more pumped about Mario Kart vs. Super Mario 3D World. At least in my perception.

Dude... what the hell?

When I play my handhelds I do so in a recliner with pillows on my lap and arms rested upon said pillows. My head leans against the back of the recliner, feet elevated in the air, arms comfortably rested. This is comfortable enough to play for hours. Or at least until my bladder threatens to burst at the seams.

Cue the "yeah but portables are supposed to be portable so derp you're doing it wrong" comments. And to that I say bullocks. Portables provide a breezy intimacy that consoles do not, and that is what I enjoy about the platform. Its "portability" aspect is just an occasional bonus.

^agreed. My Shield is basically so I can play games sitting on the couch when my wife is watching TV. The last time I can remember taking a portable outside of my house, it was the front porch.

I've always ever played portables when I was out of the house. Even as a kid, I wouldn't play Gameboy games in my home unless it was on the Super Gameboy.

Only time I play my portables these days is when I'm at conventions or 3-day tournaments.

The first system I owned all my own was the original Gameboy. I treated that like a console, even had a power brick for it. That was my Only system for a while and I played and treasured it as much as anything (sadly, it was fated to become scrap parts).

I suppose that may have influenced me a bit. But I always find it easier and more comfortable to just turn on a portable and play lying down in any position that suits me than firing up a system, TV, and devoting the time in a more confined (if only slightly) position.

There are exceptions, mind you. Fighting games (for a minor example) are usually better with a separate controller and in a more dedicated/serious gaming stance.
