Yeah, but most of the films I've been watching lately have amazing posters. It's like the better the poster, the worse the film.prfsnl_gmr wrote:Not exactly. The poster is awesome.Ack wrote:Everything about this film is bad.

In that case, R.O.T.O.R. must be the worst, least-metal film of all time.Ack wrote:Yeah, but most of the films I've been watching lately have amazing posters. Why did Nintendo never make a game of Super Mario Bros. The Movie? Capcom did that with Street Fighter II and look how great it was!MrPopo wrote:Isn't that monster head one of the Goombas from SMB?

Hey! It was pretty awesome. I love my games based on movies based on games. It is a niche genre for sure, but one that still exists! Plus it has FMV how bad could it be!?marurun wrote:Why did Nintendo never make a game of Super Mario Bros. The Movie? Gave it a 2 out of 5 on NetFlix, though it's not that bad.
The version on NetFlix is 4:3 (pan & scan) instead of 16:9 and lacks the Cryptkeeper sequences that was taken out prior to its release (I believe some releases has them added back in).
For those who don't know, this WAS supposed to be a follow-up to Bordello of Blood, but due to its *ahem* less-than-stellar performance, it was eventually stripped of its TFTC branding (i.e. the title was changed to just "Ritual", instead of being "Tales from the Crypt Presents: Ritual", the Cryptkeeper intro and outro was removed) and released as a standalone feature, much like the previous attempt at a TFTC feature film (The Frighteners).
To date, this authorized remake of "I Walked With a Zombie" (which I haven't seen) is sadly the most recent TFTC production, and it came out about 13 years ago.

The Public Enemy
Yes, I can watch good movies. And boy, what a movie! This was the breakout film for the always spectacular James Cagney. And he nailed it! He's violent, boisterous, sleazy but charming. You sort of hate him, yet wanna follow him to hell and back.
In The Public Enemy, Cagney stars as Tom Powers, a boy thief who grows up to be muscle in Paddy Ryan's mob during the height of Prohibition. But there's a rival gang in town who wants Paddy Ryan out of business, and they're willing to spill blood to do it. Cagney works his way up and leads a violent life, taking the women he wants while committing violence to ensure Paddy's gang is on top while trying to send the occasional bit of blood money home to his mother, which his straight arrow older brother doesn't like. Plus, Powers has a sidekick who will go along with him no matter the caper. It's just a shame that their world has to end in blood.
What makes this movie work is a combination of Cagney's violent and active performance and the real violence that went along with the film. The abuse against Powers' first girl in the grapefruit scene is perhaps the most poured over sequence of the film, but it's not the only one of note. The scene where Tom's brother, Mike, punches him in the face? Cagney didn't know he was going to get punched that hard. He actually broke a tooth. And the scene where the rival mob tries to gun him down in the street? Those were live rounds being fired out of that machine gun into the wall as Cagney escaped around the corner. This violent element gives the film a raw realism that makes it a blast to watch.
It's also interesting to note that this is a low-class movie at a times when American film was often geared towards a high-class glamour. Cagney wasn't the traditional film hero of the time. His character is scum, nouveau riche from bootlegging but still poor and angry in attitude. His illegal earnings and glamour were just the kind of thing a kid in the Great Depression might aspire to, and he is riveting to watch. I heartily recommend The Public Enemy for fans of gangster movies. It's got a certain trashy class to it that stays with you, and Cagney proves why he deserved to be a top star.
