PS1 Backwards Compatibility on PS3

Post by racketboy »

Do all PS3s play PS1 games or just the models that have PS2 backwards compatibility?

This page will help you: http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

So will this one: http://www.ps3comp.com/

To answer your question directly: All PS3's are backwards compatible with older PSX and PS2 software. Newer models of the PS3 have some hardware removed to cut costs (the "Emotion Engine")..which is basically the same hardware at the heart of the PS2. As a result that hardware must now be emulated in software on the newer models leading to reduced compatibility with PS2 games.

AFAIK PSX emulation was always done in software even with the launch/older models. So the newer models should be just as (maybe even more) compatible with PSX games.

There are three generations of PS3 hardware.

Generation 1, hardware backwards compatibility on PS2.

Generation 2, software backwards compatibility on PS2.

Generation 3, no backwards compatibility on PS2.

All three generations are software backwards compatible with PSX games. The PSX game you can download off the PSN are essentially ISOs.

Thanks guys. I don't know why they don't make a "Premium" edition that includes the emotion engine and a large hard drive....

Cause don't have anymore Money. They've got a big deficit, so the sell just the versions they already have and don't develop new versions, I think.

I don't know either, but it may have something to do with...NO ONE TELLING SONY WHAT WE WANT!!!!!!!!!!!!

WE CAN'T GET OUR WAY IF WE DON'T LET THE COMPANY KNOW WHAT WE WANT!

I mean, if the fans want it, the fans should get it. Sony's job is to give us whatever we want. If they're not keeping us happy, they lose our support. They lose our support, they lose money. They lose money, they go bankrupt. If they go bankrupt, they'll have to lay off all their employees. And when a big company like that dies and leaves their employees bankrupt, then that affects everything and everyone.

So... if you want something done, pester Sony till they cave. How did you think "Birds of Prey" got onto DVD? How did you think "Super Mario RPG" was released on Wii's Virtual Console? How did you think the un-fucked-up versions of the original Star Wars films ended up on DVD? The fans pestered and whined until we got our way.

Unfortunately, we are probably a minority.
Not enough people appreciate good backwards compatibility.
Most people probably aren't even aware of it.

luckily i have a 60gb with full backwards compatibility. i think eventually sony will release a firmware update or new hardware revision that plays ps2 games again. They are still selling ps2s which are most likely pure profit at this point, and they (wrongly i think) feel like if they put ps2 backwards compatibility in ps3 they will lose more money, because they wont move as many ps2 units

From Wikipedia:

"The PlayStation 3 does not include interfaces for legacy PlayStation peripherals, though IGN.com tested a legacy controller using a PS2-to-USB adapter, finding that it is compatible, though most other devices (such as the Guitar Hero controller) may not be compatible.[42] However, with the release of firmware 1.70 for the Playstation 3, Sony has added support for previous Guitar Hero controllers with generic PS2-to-USB adapters (although the whammy bar is not functional). Nyko started production on the "Play Adaptor", a PS2-to-USB adapter allowing for guitars and other PlayStation 2 peripherals to be used on the PlayStation 3 and was scheduled for release in Q2/2007, but Nyko stated at the end of March that the production of this device had been postponed due to compatibility problems with the PS3.[43] The PS3 supports both the USB EyeToy camera/webcam and SOCOM Headset for video and voice chat. A memory card adapter is available so users can copy their old PS/PS2 game saves to a virtual memory card on the PS3’s hard drive.[44] The PlayStation 3 can also use Memory Sticks to store and save data for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software.[45] New PlayStation 3 systems to not support PS/PS2 playback or Memory Sticks."

Also, the PlayStation 2 isn't fully backwards compatible, though I can't find anything about if the PS3 really is fully compatible with the PS1. According to this website, the games the PS2 wasn't compatible with apparently aren't compatible with the PS3 either, at least for the most part. Mortal Kombat Trilogy works, though it apparently has a freezing problem(similar to the Greatest Hits version of MKT when played on the PS2. The normal black version was never compatible).

Here's the list:

Fighter Maker
Final Fantasy V
Judge Dredd
Monkey Hero
Poy Poy 2
Tomba!

You can also try Sony's support page, if you want to search for particular games.
