Does anyone have much experience with playing Double Dash over LAN using the Gamecube BBA? From what I have read, there is no server necessary only a hub or switch.
So this has me wondering if the Gamecube is assigning itself an ip address or if this is all at the MAC address level. Woulf it be possible to play together over VPN?

I shall assemble my jumble of networked GameCubes the next chance I get to check this out! I don't see why you would need a VPN if it is local, anyway, but it's worth a shot. I do know that it works through a network switch with up to 8 GCs and 16 players, though. Plus, you can use Xlink to force it to do online play.

I have. And quite frankly it sucks. A major dissapointment

@OP, Xlink is tunneling software that fools the GCN into thinking two systems communicating over the internet are linked.
Not sure how they are recognized over the same network. Logic tells you that your router assigns it an IP address via DHCP...but I'd think they recognize another GCN via MAC & other proprietary protocols (Nintendo locks up mods in many ways).

This is what I was getting at in my first post though I was not aware Xlink was a thing. I am betting that Xlink is essentially a layer 2 VPN that allows connected Gamecube's to send traffic to a "Hub" but that hub is actually a hub and spoke VPN set up that allows the cubes to communicate over the net using only their own MAC addresses. I'll take a look at it and find out for sure.

Its been awhile since I played with it, but from what I remember you are spot on. Xlink is a layer 2 vpn, and the Cube does a hub/spoke setup, up to 7 spokes (the most I know of is Double Dash supporting 8 cubes).
