I just imagine all the games tbqh. That'as free too, and there's no rom site hunting or emulator configuration necessary.
I'm imagining myself playing Asteroids right now.

The brain is probably the worst console to play games on. Blurry graphics, frequent glitches, uncertain win-conditions across all games.... plus they're easily manipulated to bring in elements that weren't in the original game. A mediocre platform IMO.AppleQueso wrote:I just imagine all the games tbqh. That'as free too, and there's no rom site hunting or emulator configuration necessary.

Glad you asked!
well, i mostly play newer consoles (Dreamcast onward) but i do love all kinds of games. I'm not going to count Atari because, in my opinion, outside of a couple of games there all extremely dated.
Anyways, i feel like PS1/N64/Saturn era aged the most. second being the NES, than SNES. Although, i personally don't feel like the SNES has aged at all.

But no, I have MAME (and other emulators, and flash carts, etc etc) but there's just something about legit hardware that gets me going.
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!

Also I think it's pretty obvious now why Atari carts are super cheap but everything else requires a second job.

Re: What is Your Retro Range?
Yeah I respect the VCS and Coleco stuff, and I can find a few games still enjoyable, but on the whole, it is too primitive for me now and didnt seem to have aged well.
Hell, I can only really enjoy some select 8bit titles without being frustrated with some things. My golden retro range is the 16 and 32 bit eras, but extends to the NES, older PC gaming, and newer stuff.

Re: What is Your Retro Range?
I've been meaning to post in this thread for a bit. Anyway, I don't really have a "range" per say since I'll play just about any game you put in front of me, regardless of platform. But I don't usually play anything older than NES. I haven't played anything on the Colecovision or Intellivision, so maybe my opinion would change if I've played those. When I play Atari games, I always want to play the arcade original instead. I don't dread playing those games like others here might, I just don't gravitate towards them. I'm also not that hot on the system's exclusive games, either. As for the 80s arcade games, I fuckin' love 'em. When I first got my iCade, I played Bosconian and Galaga!

Not even kidding you have to allow your brain to go into an almost meditative trance while playing... your thumbs are still going but your mind is not fully there. When you snap out of it you have a high score and a rejuvenated sense of awareness. It's like douching the synapses. That is the tao of vintage gaming.
This is also works with beating bullet hell shooters.

16-bit is as far back as I go. Although I have a NES, Atari, Odyssey 2, I never really play them.

While it was fun to be the hipster in the room who'd prattle on about how AMAZLEZING the Intellivision and Atari 2600 are I... I just can't anymore. I've gone back and forth on adding a 2600 to my console collection but there's no way I can justify it.
For me games start where they did with my childhood: The NES, which I'm revisiting heavily for this project of mine. The most surprising thing to me is just how amazingly well some of these games hold up! My parents played a lot of Master System before I got my NES, and I've considered getting one and collecting for it. The biggest factor is that I'd need a bigger SCART switch and some extra console storage, but that'd also be a good excuse to get a Saturn... Rambling again.
I'm also going back and playing old GB/GBC games which is strange for me. As a kid I was always keenly aware of the Gameboy as a thing, but as a legally blind kid I was never able to use one, and never had one growing up. Not even the Super Gameboy. I finally got a GBC when Pokemon Red/Blue came out and played it with a magnifying glass!
For PC, no real limit. Hell, I still play and program text adventures!
TL;DR - The NES
