CRT Without Straight Scan Lines?
CRT Without Straight Scan Lines?
I was just wondering if all CRTs actually had the horizontal scan lines as seen in many emulators. I admit that some older televisions I've seen form the earlier 90s or before appear to, but the ones I've seen from around the mid-to-late 90s and later at least don't have them noticeable. I've attached an image from my JVC AV-32D502 running Wind Waker on my Gamecube through composite.

Re: CRT Without Straight Scan Lines?
I believe scanlines are inherent in the NTSC video format that standard CRT TVs were designed to display.
TECHNICALLY THOUGH I believe that CRT computer monitors don't necessarily have them. Or possibly high-definition CRT TVs. (I could be mistaken though!)

Re: CRT Without Straight Scan Lines?
Your TV has Component input, probably an EDTV that can display in 480p. HDCRTs do not have scanlines, not sure on the EDTVs though.

Re: CRT Without Straight Scan Lines?
It actually doesn't seem to support 480p, only 480i, or at least gets really finicky when I try to do progressive on it. It tends to produce a couple, maybe three duplicate images compressed horizontally with the colors displaying incorrectly.CRTGAMER wrote:Your TV has Component input, probably an EDTV that can display in 480p. Re: CRT Without Straight Scan Lines?
That just tells me there's so much bloom on your CRT that it obscures the scanlines (possibly).
Re: CRT Without Straight Scan Lines?
This is an SDTV. It does not support 480p.

You have to remember standard NTSC, although interlaced, is more than double the horizontal and vertical resolution of most retro games. I assume they'd look better on an actual 240p CRT.Nemoide wrote:I believe scanlines are inherent in the NTSC video format that standard CRT TVs were designed to display.

Lum fan.
Re: CRT Without Straight Scan Lines?
All CRTs, HD, SD, VGA, whatever, display by scanning down the screen. So if they are using a high enough refresh rate or aren't interlacing, you aren't likely to see or notice it doing it, but technically speaking, all CRTs do have scan lines. Good SD TVs can do a lot to mask their appearance. Non-interlaced CRTs usually don't have to do anything.
