Continuing with the DnB, this time in the realm of drumfunk:

Fanu is a master of fast, driving, and intricate snare work. The tracks on this album breeze through jazz, soul, hip hop, funk, and even folk, but they are all united by that ever-present flowing river of syncopated snares, weaving the tapestry all together. Lovely stuff.

Still on the DnB tip, I've decided to try to play catch-up on Digital's 2014 output, of which there is quite a lot:

Digital- "Figjam"
Digital- "Death Wish EP"
Digital- "Digital Sound EP"
Digital- "Red Tape/The Pain/Downtown"

Digital is one of my personal favorites who goes way back in DnB history, but has never had as much time in the spotlight as his contemporaries. I think he doesn't get as much recognition because he's not as musically obvious as those more popular than him, but he's always garnered respect amongst DnB veterans and he's been a personal favorite of mine for years. Digital, aka Steve Carr, comes from reggae roots with a father who used to run reggae/dub soundsystems, but whose son would later carry that music into the rave scene. Consequently, Digital's music carries with it the warmth of Reggae and dub, while tempering that with the coldness of Detroit techno, and injecting it with the earthiness of tribal drumming and bongo work. His music has sturdy power that is confident in its strength and doesn't feel the need to be in-yo-face and aggressive. Digital is the musical equivalent of a shark swimming through waters when isn't hungry. You can feel the immensity of its presence, and the coldness of its steely glare, but you can't help but revel at its natural beauty and the respect it demands despite not being on the attack.

Congo Natty- "Jungle Revolution"
Image

Congo Natty has been around since the early days of jungle... back when they still called it jungle and nobody referred to the music as drum n bass. His is the rasta influence. Ragga. For better or for worse, Congo Natty's style hasn't changed much over the years. There are, dubby basslines, echoing air horns, record rewinds, and rasta MCs toasting about the need for a revolution to burn down Babylon. Well, Babylon apparently still stands and this music doesn't quite sound like the revolution that it did back in the 90s. Nevertheless, this is a solid release for those that like reggae at 180 beats per minute. There are also a ton of notable guests, such as Adrian Sherwood, Tenor Fly, Tippa Irie, and Daddy Freddy (among many others).

Just because I was reminded of an old DnB track I hadn't heard in a while: Makai - Dark Skies

So I'm playing Smuggler's Run Warzones today (Gamecube), and I hear this amazing track on mission 5 -

Then I did a little more digging based on the ID tag and a comment on this video, turns out it was actually a licensed track.

E-Dancer - Velocity Funk
