So my brother Assman is from a foster family that is very large, as most foster families. I go to his foster dad's house every Sunday for dinner and try out all the cool stuff up to offer. The range of ethnicity is very broad over there and I get to try some cool stuff. My favourite so far is this rice and meat wrapped in grape leaves.
Anyways, tonight there was all kinds of stuff but one of them a few of the new comers were kind of iffy about. And Assman's foster dad thought I'd probably not want it. But I don't care, I'll eat anything. I've had squirrel and dog before, some green soupy snot stuff ain't gonna stop me.
well unless it has fish in it... that'll stop me cold in my tracks and possibly kill me. Literally.
Anyways he said it's called "malchaya" (spelling WAY off... pronounced "Mal- hay- ah"). He wouldn't tell us exactly what it is, but from hearing everyone at dinner, and the fact Steve (Assman's dad) is from cairo, I believe it is Egyptian. Or at least something middle eastern/arabic.
I'm wondering if any of you have heard of it and could tell me what it is! It was really tasty, but had the effect of turkey times 100, where it made me very tired.
To give you an idea of the dish it was the malchaya served warm from a pot. It's kind of soupy mixture of green leafy spice like stuff that when boiled turns slimy... once chilled it kinda looks like snot. It is poured over rice and we added red onion, vinegar and chicken to it.
I've tried googling and get nothing. Mostly because I don't know how it is spelled.
Any middle easterners???

Re: Any middle easterners???
My arab friend's mother always seemed scared to cook anything unique when I was there for the night, when visiting. I think it all started when I was little and she made 1 thing I didn't like so much, and then years later, she cooked something that filled all the air in the house with some kind of eyeball melting gas. Tears were projectile flying out of my fucking ducts, until I escaped and stayed on the front porch for a while. It was fucking insane. None of them were affected by it.
Re: Any middle easterners???
I am not sure why they call us middle easterners when we are in the middle of the map of the world, shouldn't we be called the centerners?
Any how, i dont think your friend name is ASSman, I think its more Ossman, which I believe(not sure) deformed name of the original name Othman, popular name in Sudan.
Yes, your dish is popular in egypt(and i dont think it served other where) , i know exactly what your talking about and why you cant spell it is because the name has a missing letter in English that is found in arabic.
More to the point, as far as I know, its made using rabbit meat. Googling it, it appears to have english name of Jews Mellow.
here some links I found, hope it helps:

Re: Any middle easterners???
His name isn't Ossman... his name is Ashton... he's not Egyptian, his foster dad is. He's adopted. Hence how he is my brother but has a different family then me. Assman is my nickname for him.
But thanks man! That's exactly what I was looking for. So would have never figured out how to spell that.
Oh and I think it's middle easterner because before Europeans traveled to the "east" (asia) and the known world consisted of Europe and Africa mostly. The middle east would have been middle latterly and east longitudally. With the exact middle being the mediterranean sea.
Similarly how Japan and China may call America "the west" when we are just east across the Pacific.

He's not my blood brother either.ott0bot wrote:thats confusing. he's you blood brother, but was adopted my an egytian guy? is that what you're saying?
It's actually REALLY confusing and I usually don't bother explaining my relation to every one of my siblings. Bare in mind I grew up in a house hold of 80 bajillion kids from several different parents including some who were adopted by other families and the sort. They are my siblings in one way or another... but aren't particularly blood related.
To tell you the truth I have only 1 full blood sibling (same mom and dad), 2 half siblings (one with same mom, another with same dad), then a huge collection of adopted, step, and contingent siblings. What I mean by contingent is like my half brother mark (same dad as me) has a half sister from his mom. Sometimes it gets so confusing it starts sounding bizarre like my step sister's cousin's mom is my cousin.
But yeah, sometimes I don't get it all either. But to put it simply, my father is a whore.
