Sad to see the 3DS struggle so badly :(. I know the market has greatly shrunker but I was hoping for at least GBA levels of success. Don't know how much 3rd party support Nintendo's next handheld will get :/

You're measuring end of life numbers to mid life numbers.

Well the 3DS has like what? another 2 years? At best it will get to 70 million units, but I'm feeling that it will be more likely close to 60-65. Still a great system, and my favorite of this generation, but it's just sad to see the way we enjoy the hobby becoming niche.

Whats wrong with it becoming niche? I for one would be happy if less people enjoyed video gaming, maybe the used market wouldnt be so expensive, my opinion.

How many records can you see being released on vynil compared to digital?

And I'm sorry but the entire "used market is expensive I want less people to play games" thing is just so

Popo's right, the life of both those systems isn't over and not near it either. You're looking at 2017 or 2018 to see both of them replaced. The New3DS if they bother to get games out for it that really support it and keep a stream of that, and if the third parties again take to it like they did the 3DS, that'll do a lot for those numbers.

When Nintendo factors in Gameboy totals back in the 90s they also included the GBP and GBC in those, they never broke them out. The same is said for the DS/Lite/DSi despite in both cases the last iteration despite them being double the power and performance output.

Sure the market is shrinking thanks to phone/tablet games and even real ones on those because you can get little controllers now, but they'll still sell as many people want a dedicated device still, not a swiss army knife that just does games too. 50.4M units as is that is definitely not something to pity at all given the added competition here that the DS didn't face a few years ago.

Hey just something else to ponder, look at the attach rate on the 3DS and the DS from hardware to software. The 3DS is pulling around 4 1/2 games/system and the DS is at 6. That's really not bad at all given the bite touch games have taken into things.

You know this reminds me all the bullshit MS tried to pull about having the highest attachment rate in the industry. Both the DS and Wii had really good attachment rates, I just think 3rd party developers couldn't compete with Nintendo.

Also I wonder how much racketboy inflates those attachment rate numbers xD. I know I'm already somewhere at 12-15 3DS games, without counting around 20 digital games (only 3 of which had physical releases though, and one of them only came out in Japan)

I have 20+ 3DS retail games and up to 10 additional eshop/vc games. I would think most Racketboy members who have a 3DS has an attach rate higher then the average.

Anyway, just a heads up that the demo for Codename S.T.E.A.M. came out today along with Gunman Clive 2 ($3). I grabbed both along with the original Gunman Clive.

Wanted to throw this out to the group re: collecting for the 3DS. It was noted in another Nintendo thread that because of online digital offerings, reprints for 3DS games seem few and far between, causing the value in first party titles to increase rather fast.

Couple examples - Ocarina of Time, Kid Icarus Uprising and Star Fox.

Are there any others that you'd caught that seem to have had their value escalated?

I don't think selling 50 million units of a $200 item worldwide is "struggling". You'll be in business a long time if you can pull that off, unless your margins are unrealistically small. I can't believe the R&D and parts add up to the 3DS being one of those consoles that (supposedly) sells the systems at a loss and make the money up with software. Plus, the Wii exploded because of it's gimmicky set up (not that it was bad but that's why) and the DS is what? Like 12 years old??
