I just did the Hard Drive swap and re-install of YDL 6.1 (Had 5.0 on the old hard drive). The hard drive install is phenomenally easy. Look it up on Google and/or YouTube. The number of guides that tell you how to do it is innumerable. Just need a Philips Head and your ready.

Haven't read through this, but afterdawn is usually the place I turn to for info.

This is the drive I installed, just so you know.

The YDL install... just make sure you are borrowing a friends HDTV. It's much easier to just install YDL on an HDTV and switch the video mode from 3 to 1 so it'll work on an SDTV. Also, make sure you click "Software Development" in the check-list of packages to install with YDL, unless you don't care about emulation on your PS3. (In which case, I wonder, why the hell are you going through this trouble?)

I actually had to install this three times. The first, I installed on an HDTV but didn't know to click "Software Development". The second, I had to do the text-based install because I didn't have access to the HDTV at the time. Couldn't figure out how in the hell to go from pure-text mode after the install to GUI mode. The third time, I did it right by installing on an HDTV, clicking Software Development, and throwing in the extra lines to yaboot.conf so that I could easily switch from HD and SD mode.

This guide is enough for just about anybody.

Edit: Also, as for the 10GB allocation, I gave the 10GB to Linux/OtherOS. The whole reason I got a new drive was because I ran out of space for game installs/PSN games. With Linux, you should be able to hook up an external hard drive to run games, pictures, movies, music, etc. All you'd need to install on the PS3 hard drive are the emulators, VLC, and maybe a few other programs of interest.

But yeah, it would be nice if they allowed us to customize the partitions. I could survive with 25GB for YDL and the other 225 GB for PS3.

Can you access files in the PS3 partition from within the linux distro (i.e. to dump files within the PS3 partition if I use the 10gig partition for linux)?
