What is Your Retro Range?

You know, I don't think I have a range in theory but I surely have one in practice.

For example, I wouldn't have an issue to play a good Atari 2600 game but there aren't many I would actually consider good, I played Adventure and a bit of Pitfall and can't really see myself playing anything else on the system just like I can't think of many worthwhile Jaguar games.

Old computers are pretty cool, too. The Apple II was the place to be. More selection than almost anything else, at least for US-developed titles.

I dunno. Granted I'm biased toward C64 as it's what I had, but I remember far more C64 games than Apple II in the stores when I was younger. I also knew far more other people with Commodores and games than Apples.

C64 all the way. It blew Apple II out of the water in quality and quantity. I am biased as well though, I spent so much time with mine. "Stay a while, stay forever!!" You don't get that on the Apple II.

I'm glad I'm not alone. The NES, Master System, that style of graphics is as far back as I'll go.

I have a 2600 and a couple dozen games for it. But there's no nostalgia with it for me, and games like Donkey Kong and Pac Man are better played on the NES. Maybe there's a few games that would actually hold my interest, but I haven't found them. There's still PLENTY of good games that I've never played for the NES and beyond, and since I didn't grow up with the 2600 there's no reason for me to play it really. The graphics and gameplay are way too basic for me in a lot of those games.

Poor 2600... I recently got mine out and have been playing some old favorites. They are great games when you don't have a lot of time to play. You can't do too much in Skyrim in 15 minutes, but you can really get into Asteroids in that amount of time!

GOG.com Their DOSbox setups are impressive. Get you right into the game without having to futz around.

And if you can't find an old DOS game on GOG, check out DJ Oldgames. He makes excellent DOSbox package installers for his hosted DOS games that auto-setup everything like GOG's do. Just install and play.

I think the NES is the oldest I'll go for consoles. Maaaybe I'll go for a 2600 sometime, but it's definitely not a strong want.

Not quite sure how far back I'll go with PC stuff though. Haven't really thought about it since I have a lot of trouble running older games on my computer :/ (stupid Windows 8 )

Don't forget that Archive.org has a whole compendium of DOS games that run straight from the browser in a safe, legal fashion.

If I see these in an arcade, I might give them a whirl for 15 minutes and enjoy them a little. But in my everyday life, theres no way I'm going to buy an Atari 2600 and collect these - they just don't really do it for me.

Game & Watch is a little better even though it's arguably even simpler. I think portability helps. That said, I'd mich rather play the G&W gallery versions with more interesting mechanics added than the classic versions, and they're still more a novelty to me.
