Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
At the time, for a free game at least, Cave Story was great. It's not the best indie game ever by today's standards, but I don't think I'd compare it with the likes of FTL/Hotline/etc.

My feeling exactly and I did it too, sadly I don't think the PS4 has that or I missed it. Steam allows you to kill that nonsense from violating your screen as well buried in the menus.AppleQueso wrote:Yeah I've never given a crap about achievements so it's not really ever an issue for me with anything
The day PS3 had that update that allowed you to turn trophy notifications off I hit that option SO fast.
I just hate the things, they're a waste of space and have no value in my eyes other than another form of e-peen measuring, bragging, a digital pissing contest. They're globally inconsistent on what deserves being a trophy worth having. Wow you hit 2 guys with a bullet, wow you watched the opening movie of the game entirely, wow you clicked save for the first time, and wow you found a clearly not so hidden but hidden room the first of many in a game. Zzz...
As far as Cave Story goes, far too much sucking up which has diluted the real quality of the game causing false impressions that either don't live up to it, or make you maybe think it's not that great but talked up to get buzz. I got it back when it was first translated it and enjoyed it, kept that around until years later when I got a paid copy through some Steam deal and that 3DS card too. It's fun, it's very well made, but it's not and should have never been the barometer of what's cool and should be done in indie titles.

I think this is dead on, and I feel that something similar happens with a LOT of popular titles.Tanooki wrote: As far as Cave Story goes, far too much sucking up which has diluted the real quality of the game causing false impressions that either don't live up to it, or make you maybe think it's not that great but talked up to get buzz. Cave Story was never intended to be a 'hit', it was just a jaapnese dude's spare time project.

I am curious to know what you think should be done in indie titles?Tanooki wrote: It's fun, it's very well made, but it's not and should have never been the barometer of what's cool and should be done in indie titles.

Indie games should be whatever the creator wants them to be. That's the whole point of going indie - not having corporate shills breathing down your neck to make the game more like Call of Duty or World of Warcraft or whatever else the suits think will sell.
When you as an independent are still dependent on another game to gauge your success (Cave Story in this case) then you are completely missing the point of what it means to be indie.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Bogus, tough call really. I am tiring of people trying to just ape the 8bit graphics and gameplay style so much trying to get that attention Cave Story did. There really isn't a style or genre I'd think would be a specific better direction. It just comes down to a good idea that's well implemented and maybe does something new, or does some older stuff in a new smart way to make it a fun draw to want to buy it, play it and hopefully come back to it. If there was some magic bullet format that would be nice but that won't happen. I just don't want to see indie games go down the console hole of find just a few things that work great, then everyone rip it off hardcore to get some of that me-too action is all.
I know totally original styles and ideas are hard to come by and few compared to 20 or 30 years ago because that ground is broken. Hell you know if someone wants to ape a format, find something a lot of people really adore that was never revisited and do that. If it's a game on the whole, or perhaps a unique mix and match of styles that worked well (like Act Raiser on SNES) and go with it. Naming that one alone I could think of some great game that could come from that format with a bit more meat added to it, yet Enix tossed it for a poor platformer in its sequel which buried the franchise. Like 7k said and I did earlier differently, if you're just copying someone else who had a hit just to try and have a hit too, you're kind of missing the point.

I hate touch screen controls.
Not because they don't work, they work fine. But because it smears up your screen with inevitable finger grease. Don't give me that wash your hands you slob stuff because I do, I have immaculately clean hands. You could eat off my hands hell you could perform surgery off my hands. But they will leave grease and oils eventually on every pristine touch screen I have. So after one good play session BLAMMO I gots the screen with the greasy sheen.

Stylus controls are okay I guess.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I really liked Cave Story when it was first translated to English. At the time, the idea of just one guy (Pixel) making a game this polished was really astonishing to me. It also felt like a revival for metroidvania games, with it's own unique and charming universe.
I think all of those things are still true, but there have been a number of lackluster metroidvanias released since then and tons of retro throwback games, and even a few new cases of sole developers creating fully fleshed out games on their own.
There have been a slew of more interesting (as well as definitely much worse) indie games that have followed Cave Story, but I think it remains a notable title in indie gaming history, even if a lot of its success can also be attributed to being released at the right time.

Ha, yes I pretty much feel the same way. Relevant:Exhuminator wrote:I hate touch screen controls.
