Yeah the "start a kickstarter for everything' thing is kinda weird.

It really bothers me with those that broke away from big companies to start their own thing. I get it that the money is a huge factor, but if you are so sure you can pull it off, go for the gamble please. I'm not throwing any money at you until you show me something real.

I have been burned a few times on Kickstarter donating money to games that actually never got finished. I learned my lesson and no longer do that.

There's been a certain amount of this in the games market all along. Some companies are worse about this than others.Forlorn Drifter wrote:Broken games, incomplete games, unplayable messes, things shooting for art and forgetting the game, etc.
Thing is, while there is bit of a bubble going on in the indie market, we're not staring down an Atari-style crash, and with a little time things will settle. Information travels quickly over the 'net these days, so despite the proliferation of titles clogging the markets (Steam, iOS, Android), good games are still finding recognition, and true stinkers are still failing to sell. I still think lowered barriers to entry are better for games, and gamers, pretty much all around.

Do you find that RPG's exhaust you? That they almost feel like work?
That the time v the reward is not overly worth it?
In my case I would possibly exclude the "action RPG" genre, but other than that most other RPG's just don't do it for me.
Not sure if that's an "unpopular gaming opinion" or not.
That's all I got.

I played through Cave Story a couple of years ago to see what the hype was all about. It was ok, but nothing to really write home about, and it suffers from some horribly broken achievements that completely sour my opinion of it. If it were a game like Dungeons of Dredmor, where the only thing I took issue with was the achievements, I'd probably care more for it...but it just didn't stand out to me. I beat it, and I haven't looked at it since. Besides, around the time I got Cave Story on Steam, I had actually picked up a slew of indie titles around that same time, and Hotline Miami was what I spent most of my time focusing on.

Eh the achievements criticism seems unfair, it was originally a freeware pc game after all, and the achievements were clearly tacked on way later by different people.
It also kinda basically started the big indie PC boom, everyone and their dog wanted to copy it or make 'the next Cave Story' or whatever. I remember crawling around TIGSource (or some place like that) and the amount of Cave Story wannabes there was ridiculous.
In any case I can kinda see why Pixel's never gone back to the game.

The way I see it, it's part of the larger issue with achievements on Steam, that there is no quality control. And games that are affected by this are then tainted in a way. Sure, in some cases the devs go back and add content or fix the issue, but nobody really seems to care to fix things in Cave Story, so why should I bother?AppleQueso wrote:Eh the achievements criticism seems unfair, it was originally a freeware pc game after all, and the achievements were clearly tacked on way later by different people.

Yeah I've never given a crap about achievements so it's not really ever an issue for me with anything
The day PS3 had that update that allowed you to turn trophy notifications off I hit that option SO fast.

Just think of it like this: if a dev not willing to go back and patch this, what else is that dev not willing to patch?AppleQueso wrote:Yeah I've never given a crap about achievements so it's not really ever an issue for me with anything
