I just ordered a Retron 5 from newegg they are 115. Well my question is what are some first most have games I should try. Something I can read in english. I like rpgs and heard Terranigma is good but is there a translation? Could I just use PAL version?

PAL version is very rare. Get the Japanese original (Tenchi Souzou) and patch it.

Got mine today.
Almost missed the courier. I thought it was my annoying neighbor coming to pester me again about an ever so slightly overhanging branch.

So the system itself (the frame of it) feels pretty sturdy.
Surprised by that as I had heard differently. Maybe I received the "revised" model?

The controller took ages to fully charge. In fact it was dead out of the box.
Not sure about it yet. Maybe the design will grow on me.

Later on as soon as I have some free time I need to read up on how to perform that firmware update.
I take it it's not too complicated? Any particular size sd card?

The controller will need to charge when you first get it, that's not uncommon.

Firmware updates are no problem, use any size SD card as the updates are less than 1GB. Make sure to check what version(s) of the firmware you have under Settings first. Hardware revision (firmware) should be at 0.2.2 before proceeding with the soft-firmware update, I'd recommend 2.0 BETA 6 as that's the one I have, also the most stable and has the most features right now. Go to http://www.retron5.in to get updates.

Going to agree with dish on the +1...if you have original controllers they feel so much better and they aren't as loud as that thing is. Once i get around to rehooking mine up that is exactly how I'll be playing(since I did pick up a propad6 for the genesis side and have the nes and snes ones already)

- If you can push down between the cart slots on top and it doesn't bend and if your system has little rubber caps over the controller ports on the side -- it's new, the solid well built model.

- The controller is slow to charge, it uses a cell phone battery, and it comes with a long cord to anticipate it, but really, don't use it, a SNES controller is your best friend for all the systems on there.

- Step 1, go to system and select the SD update option at the very bottom (with the card in back.) Step 2, it put a file there, take it to the PC, and go to the R5 update page. Step 3, click the button give it the file, due to lame capcha code, and it will download the update. Step 4, put it on the SD and put that SD back in your system and it will auto-update ... DONE.

Any SD card is fine, I'd suggest some cheapo 1-2GB so you're not wasting money. Also if you want to use translations, hacks, and other junk, just copy it on the card and leave it there as the game system will pick it up. You just go into a menu before starting the game and activate those fixes and it will run them.

Regarding the SD card, a fast or large card isn't important, but get a quality card. If you're like me, your saves are important to you, and the best way to preserve them is to set the system to default to storing them on the SD card, and take it out to make a backup every now and then. Low quality SD cards are ticking time bombs.

(This also makes it much easier to grab screenshots. Storing them on the SD card by default means you don't have to move them around with the crappy Retron file browser UI.)
