The oldest consoles I'll play are the NES and SMS.
But I love my Apple IIe computer which lets me play ancient games like Zork, Ultima, and Jumpman and I have no problem with those.

And if we're talking arcade games, I'm pretty open minded. I'd rather play games from the mid-80s to late-90s, but I'm totally open to sinking some quarters into Breakout or something.

I have tried to enjoy the pre video game crash era games but I just can't get into them, I don't know they just are too abstract and take too much imagination. I don't mind early arcade games though, like joust and pac man.

These threads pop up quite often and the lack of pre-NES love always makes me sad.

This is a retro gaming forum, by golly!

My first system was the NES at the end of 1985, and my first computer was Christmas 1990 and it had a big free game bundle CD along with also 'The Manhole.' Because of those things, my taste in console games are the refinements the NES gave us, and PC games from 1988-1990 and after though most of the 1990s when it comes to retro.

It isn't just Nintendo though, later years got me a Master System and a Nomad(Genesis) too plus a Turbo Duo. I find most the time I bounce between liking 8 or 16bit the most. I did have a N64 in its life, the PS1 as it was dying and PS2 hit too, but I find it very hard to go back and enjoy much of those. I find that first generation of 3D home systems to be on the level of pre-NES era stuff, where you had to have it as your first or it's just too crusty for most of the games. Making it worse, those systems don't work right on LCDs anyway.

Beyond that I don't have a retro range, I just keep around a few games I like for the Gamecube and try something new on occasion but like the N64 I've only got around 20~ games for stuff post-SNES. As far as portables go, I settled on only keeping a GBA around as I really do like the 8bit Gameboy but it's hard to stick with it long as they haven't aged as well as the NES did.

As far as consoles go, I'm locked into 2nd-6th gen. The oldest I got now is a 7800 (3rd gen console with all my original 2nd gen 2600 carts) and the newest would be the Gamecube.

Outside of that, the sky's the limit for arcade and PC stuff. Thanks to retro collections on the PC & consoles, MAME, GOG and keeping my old floppy disks around, I'm guaranteed some memories!

For me the range is NES to Gamecube. Though, in truth, I'm less interested in generations than I am in particular systems and games.

NES, PC-Engine, Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast are my primary system loves.

Late 2nd gen (SMS/NES) thru 6th/7th gen (PS2/Wii) would be my range. I enjoy early-mid 2nd gen (2600/Colecovision/Intellivision) occasionally, but on the whole it's just too arcane/simplistic for me.

Primarily I enjoy late 2nd gen and 3rd gen, but I think that's mostly nostalgia -- NES, SNES, Genesis were the systems I had (or had access to thru friends) growing up. 4th/5th has no appeal to me nostalgia-wise but they still have some damn good games if you go for the 2d games rather than the previously-noted poorly aged 3d games. 6th gen really picks up with PS2, I love a lot of those games... 7th didn't hook me too much other than Wii games -- I liked a handful of PS3 games, fewer 360 games.
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!
Cheat sheet of my collection, always looking to increase it. 405/677 licensed games, 46/"95" unlicensed

The 16 bit era is definitely my favorite but as my interests have expanded I find myself going back in time rather than forward.

I remember that my uncle had an Intellivision when I was very young that I thought was amazing at that time. I would really like to explore the Intellivision library one of these days.
