I think games could (and should actively seek to) learn a lot from the movie industry regarding how to handle nudity and sexual situations. The trouble is that many, many games still treat those subjects from an adolescent viewpoint. Eroge visual novels are a particularly egregious example regarding this sort of treatment. So much of the attitude seems to revolve around, "Tee hee, OMG boobies!" We're getting there, and Heavy Rain is a good example, but we still have a long ways to go. In movie terms we've only barely progressed much past Porky's.

The issue of content within a game, originally I was referring to that. It is absurd anyone would see nudity in an M-rated game with contention, yet not mind it in an R-rated film. That "games are only for kids" hypocrisy is what I believe will continue to fade in time with successive generations of gamers.
Here the distinction might be more about the technology of film vs games. Nudity in a medium where one must move and interact is more closely aligned with the movement and interaction of having physical sex, whereas nudity in film is more associated with nudity in painting, sculpture, etc. - which is to say it is voyeuristic at worst, but not as analogous to sex in life.

The same thing holds for violence, too.

To be clear, I am not saying these are fair perspectives to have on games...in fact they are overly simplistic. But, on the other hand, I think it is a BAD idea for gaming to try and take cues from the movie industry as a path forward towards "respectability"...it is an idea that tries to erase and minimize the important differences that gaming technologies offer.

I think you've got an excellent point about the differences regarding these respective mediums. I also think that trying to transition into "respectibility" as a stated goal is likewise a bad idea. And really an adolescent treatment of sex is not necessarily a bad thing (look at the success of Judd Apatow), it would just be nice if that wasn't necessarily the boilerplate that nearly all games follow in this capacity.
