Why is it we get so many high fantasy games, and never low fantasy games? What up with that.

What are you considering as low fantasy?

Because for most people when they think Fantasy they think Tolkienesque, thanks to the general pervasiveness of Tolkien and D&D (which is playable Tolkien). It's only recently that low fantasy properties like Game of Thrones and The Witcher have started to break into the general public.

Probably not the best term. I just mean fantasy that is high fantasy.

Say, Conan the Barbarian, along those lines. Magic is feared, rare, or shown to be false. Morality is more gray, and the story is less about saving the world and more about getting money, or something the average joe would be after. I had a good article going for what I was thinking of, but I can't find it.

Sword and Sorcery might be another good way to describe it.

Tokien had good stuff, I just wish he hadn't become the end all of fantasy for most people.

Ah. I just asked since I think the term is meant to describe things that are pretty much the real world, except some fantastical element. IE, it's New York City, but, there are witches. Versus darker, more personal, or whatever type stories that are still set in completely fictional worlds, making them fantasy/high fantasy.

Not to spark a different debate or anything, just saying, it'd matter what you had in mind.

I think we have been seeing a rise in popularity of what you're talking about. More grey areas at least. The Witcher games, definitely. Dragon Age, while encompassing some world-saving plots, weaves in a lot of grey areas.
Offhand, Hunted: The Demon's Forge starts more with the motivation of reward than saving the world. Bound By Flame might count too there. There were relatively recent Conan games too

Yeah, low fantasy was the wrong word there.

If I wanted to be really specific, sword and sorcery games that are RPGs. We'd be looking at... Witcher, and not much else. (Recently, at least)

Also, after playing around with Dwarf Fortress... is there some good mods or already modded versions with more advanced graphics and mouse controls? I can't see crap with how it currently looks. Just seeing if anybody knows.

Man, I would love to see an Elric of Melniboné game done properly (or at all for that matter). There are so many aspects of that character that would lend them selves to interesting play mechanics.

Sounds like Urban Fantasy is the term you're looking for instead of low fantasy.
